Please explain why. Personally, I don't think it matters that much because Yao's a humble and smart guy, he'll learn whatever he can from whoever that want to teach him. Yao's got the best learning attitude of any player I seen for a long time. I vote for everyone because every single one of them is great to learn from. Sorry if I forgot to include some great bigman.
walton. not only did walton possess a gametype that was similar to yao ming's, he also is a very basketball educated man. when you get past all the hyperbole, walton knows his sh*t. walton learned from one of the greats of all time: john wooden.
i enjoyed his attitude too. i did not enjoy listening to him talk or grunt or whatever the hell he was doing!
what on earth is deceptive about bill walton, Yetti? are you basing this on his broadcast personality? it's just that...a broadcast personality...entertainment, ya know. what is this based on?
is having a 'big mans coach' that important. Why not spend more money and get a couple of good assistant coaches instead.
Walton will stay in the booth. Hakeem is not a teacher. Malone banged Hakeem around 25 years ago, but probably can't bang Yao now. Ewing - no. Russell - as a private Yao tutor perhaps? Not fit for a j o b. Kareem Abdul Jabbar is the man actually looking for a coaching job right now. He's also a Wooden guy. He has knowledge and insight and has kept close to the game. He has been humbled and is showing the desire to remake his public and press image. His game is directly applicable to Yao. He understands what a wiry tall guy can do to rebound and be effective, even if he's not heavy. And just imagine that skyhook from Yaoville . I think this is the guy who really wants a job, and all the responsibilities that come with it.
To me, when selecting a coach, it comes down to three things: Who understands the game the most, who played the most like we want Yao to play, and who is the best communicator. To me the answer to the first is clearly Walton, all apologies to Russell aside, as Walton was at least as smart, and more recently, and the answer to the second is a toss up between Walton and Jabbar, depending on how you envision Yao's role, but I'd go with Big Red. For the third it's between Walton and Russell. So put together, it has to be Walton. I highly doubt, however, that we're going to have these as our options to pick and choose from, and if Ewing is interested, I'd have no problem with that. He's well schooled, played recently, and was always a fundamental player more than a physically dominat one.
MacBeth, no doubt. of couse, this is all hypothetical. still, walton is clearly the "big man" i'd want to personally coach yao ming. on a related note, i wonder if it would be possible to get sabonis to come over as an assistant coach either this year (which would require buying out his final year) or next (upon completion of his contract w/portland)? that'd be outstanding...
BILL WALTON MAN. He loves Yao. And he's smart........though weird. Anyways...I think he would love to help Yao out...but he is with ESPN/ABC right now..
I guess this is just being sentimental, or feeling guilt for wanting to trade him in the end, but I think it should go to Dream. I know he has never done it, I know he doesn't have the best reputation for teaching but... but... He's Dream. If we're not even sure if we need a big man coach, I say give it to Dream and see how he does. Of course, if he wants it. If he doesn't I'm fine with just about anyone on that list. Most fine with Moses, least fine with Pat.
IMO there is no question about who would be the best coach. Kareem Abdul Jabbar He has coached and he wants to coach. His style of play closely resembled that of Yao Mings. Kareem very intelligent and speaks extremely well. Kareem has had the opportunity to attempt to coach such knuckleheads as Shawn Bradley and Kandiman. With Yao Mings desire to learn and his willingness to be coached this seems like a perfect match. Why not Moses? Because the Collin Pine would need an interpreter to understand Moses and then he would have to relate it back to Yao Ming. Way too much would be lost in the translation. Besides did Mo ever teach Dream to pass or play the finesse game? No. Certainly Moses could offer some things to help Yao Mings game such as rebounding and toughness but his game is just so different than what Yao has that Kareem would just be a lot better. Why not Dream? See Moses. Why not Walton? Sure Big Red has the knowledge and his game has a lot of similarities as Yao Mings but how much knowledge would Yao Ming gain while smoking refer with Bill at a Dead Head concert? Besides, Bills endless ramblings are enough to get on anyone’s nerves after about 5 seconds. Why not Ewing? I think the better question is why Ewing? Another person that does not have a similar game to Yao Ming. I would much prefer Moses to Ewing.
