I noticed a caption for the voting segment stated Moses Malone averaged about 17 rebounds per game. I have known this, but the reminder has served as a shock to the lack of great rebounders which seemed abundant in the 70's and 80's. Perhaps, it's just my imagination, after all I have not checked the stats. However, I am pretty sure the lack is apparent. Can anyone give me reasons for this. Thanks. ------------------ Sometimes you gotta do the next best thing!
One factor is that the game has slowed down a great deal, so fewer shots are taken and as a result fewer shots are missed, meaning there are fewer rebounding opportunities. ------------------
I think the preponderance of athletic guards lowers rebounds as well. They are able to get in there and sky for boards or get rebounds that no one else gets. For instance, Steve averages 6 boards per game while traditional guards used to average around 3 or so at the most . . . that's 3 boards fewer for an interior player to get ------------------ "Any answer that can't be questioned is no answer at all. Moved this from BBS Hangout. What is amazing to me is that I can remember when two Rockets would grab double digit rebounds EVERY NIGHT. Amazing. The thing that effected this the most is the fact that scoring is WAY WAY down due to stronger defenses. ------------------ The way to use life is to do nothing through acting, The way to use life is to do everything through being. - Lao-Tzu [This message has been edited by Jeff (edited January 02, 2001).]
Would you say the lack of top assist point guards (compared to former years) is attributed to the same explanation? ------------------ Sometimes you gotta do the next best thing!
I saw the Rockets for the first time this year on New Years day in a very lackluster loss to the MN T-wolves. What struck me most about the Rockets was their almost total lack of off. rebounding. I long for the days when guys like Hakeem, Horry and Otis Thorpe would work their way to getting clutch rebounds, along with playing great D which the present Rockets also don't do. ------------------
It is only down because there is a lack of emphasis on it. Great rebounders will always be valuable. Look at Fortsan, he was playing great before he was hurt. Barkley would still average 12 boards in this league. The game may have slowed down, but the sound of "CLANK" is heard far more often in today's game. There are alot of 3's shot in today's game. 3 point shots usually don't drop around the hoop - they caroom out further. They're a little harder to rebound. Everyone shoots them. Even PF's like Rasheed Wallace and Centers like Raef LaFrentz. ------------------ GATER [This message has been edited by GATER (edited January 03, 2001).]
Part of the issue is that total rebounds are down, over a long period of time. Games these days probably average 5 fewer rebounds than they did ten years ago, due to a slower style of play. ------------------ "Thirty-seven?" -Randall, Clerks www.clutchtown.com
In 94 and 95, the Rockets were dead last in offensive rebounds. And they won two championships. I'm not sure of the days you long for. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS
