GATER, It may have happened exactly like you stated or exactly like I stated or somewhere in between. Who really knows outside of Les and CD. Personally I chose to believe that CD just didn’t think it was a good fit but once again it is nothing more than speculation from me. The one place we do agree however is that Brown was the best available candidate and that Steve obviously wanted him.
GATER, Why are you so high on Larry Brown? You believe Larry Brown is a 1st Tier Coach? Then where are his rings? He made some really bad off season moves last summar, trading away Motumbo for Van Horn. I'm guessing this is one of the reasons why he is left and of course the other reason is because of Iverson. Brown is taking a job in Detroit, which I guarantee has no chance of winning a championship. You want a guy who's ultimate goal isn't to win a championship but would rather be content on raising a Leastern Conference Banner. I'm not even sure if Detroit will even be able to do that considering, Nets look like the favorite powerhouse for the next few years if Kidd decides to stay. Say what you will about Browns greatness but to me, he's second Tier.
Get over it. JVG will prove you wrong. He is the coach that this team needs. Defense wins Championships. Considering the offense the Rockets have played the last four years, JVG's offense can't be that bad. Let us see where the Rockets end up next season.
because MD actually had a brain to make plays for pippen, whereas rudy looked dumbfounded. that hopefully answers your question
Uhh, have you seen Mutombo sitting in his warmups earning the maximum salary at 36-40? years old on hte Nets bench lately? Shedding Dikembe was one of the greatest coups in the history of sports along with the SOnics getting rid of Vin Baker.
Er Crash, in your first post you insist that the people on this board who believed Brown was our first choice will have to eat crow, then you come back twice and admit your first post was idle speculation. Yes, I believed Clutch's article about Brown, and I was predisposed to do so. But you haven't given any reason why anyone shouldn't. I would feel better if I believed your theory, however I'm not sure Van Gundy is not the right man for the job.
I think Crash's initial point was valid and has been somewhat lost in all the noise. The only real salient thing I think he was getting at is this: IF it turns out that JVG is both the coach hired AND the coach Les wanted to hire all along (as I believe I remember reading on more than one occasion), then nothing that has happened so far in this coaching search has gone against that idea. All this controversy concerning LB has come from outside the franchise, mostly from fans and armchair GMs. All along, CD and Les have acted as though things are going just the way they want. Is it so inconceivable that LB might not have made himself into the Rockets' 'at-all-costs' coach? I don't think so. I think it's entirely possible that Les and CD (and even Rudy) could legitimately think that what JVG would bring to this team would be better than what any of the other coaches might bring. And yes, Dunleavy is a good oach too, and has 'family ties' to the franchise, but wins and butts in seats is what it's all about, so the guy most likely to bring the W's is the only criteria to use. So when Crash says people will eat crow, I think what he meant was that he thinks Les and CD have been doing what they originally wanted and intended to do all along, rather than making the huge mistakes so many people are accusing them of. Me, personally I give JVG an edge, because I think the Rox need defense on the brain, especially in the West. Offensively, I believe the team can't help but be better, with EG and Ming a year older and NBA-wiser, and maybe even Nachbar getting into the act as well. A little more defensive intensity here and there over the past season, and this team makes the playoffs. It is kind of funny to think about the notion that CD and Les are just going about their business, things happening exactly the way they want, and everyone freaking out so badly.. heheh I guess it's a better situation than having no one care about the franchise at all, especially during what is going to be a long hard offseason.. at least people are talking about the team.. What was it Oscar Wilde said? "The only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about." ciao
Let me refresh your memory Crash5179 by posting some of your own topics Pass on Yao...here's why More important info on Yao Alternatives to Yao and what could be But, since you have changed your opinion on Yao I guess its OK. Just reminding you, your opinions on Yao was biased and due to ignorance, and Im detecting the same things in your dislike for JVG.
JVG is a good D coach. But I thought Houston's biggest problem was their O. And the Knicks under JVG had one of the ugliest O's in the game. As for affordability, then JVG makes just as much sense as Larry Brown. JVG is going to be offerred almost as much as LB. Consensus is that other than Brown, JVG's the most sought after coach on the market. Eddie Jordan fills our needs much better. His offense is based on motion, transition and early offense. His half court O consists of a lot of back door picks, screens and moving w/o the ball. The Nets are also very opportunistic on D. And Jordan should be much more affordable than any of the popular coaching names available. Finally, Jordan is flexible. He was able to successfully change and integrate his O philosophy. Both JVG and Jordan were former asst. coaches later elevated to head coach, neither won any championships. But Jordan never quit, that is what bothers me most about Van Gundy.
Maybe to be nice to Dunleavy and see, just maybe, if CD/Les might want him as badly as Dunleavy wanted the Rox? Who knows.
Of course everything in my initial post is speculation since I am no insider and I am not privileged to any info anyone else on this board is not. Having said that what I said seems to make since and I do believe that it is entirely possible that JVG was the main choice all along. I believe the interviews to the other candidates were just to insurance interviews but JVG is and always has been the top candidate. Of course I have no way to prove it. Like you I don't believe that JVG is the right man for the job but if he is hired then I will get on board with him and hope he turns out to be great.
So without Jason Kidd the Nets are completely unable to run a motion offense? How about explaining that to the Kings, or any of Princeton's teams under Carril. Or perhaps you are of the opinion that EVERY team, from youth leagues to high school to college to the NBA, require Jason Kidd to successfully run transition offenses, early offenses or motion offenses. Sounds like someone is trying very hard to justify the Knicks' unimaginative offenses. Charlie Ward? Maybe YOU should try again.
Oh, yeah, any team can try and run that offense, but how many have players talented enough to be successful? I'll tell you what, the Rockets don't. I'm sure you know what it takes to run that kind of offense, I don't need to explain it to you. I'm also not trying hard to justify the Knicks' offense. When Ewing faded, he had to use ISO because they didn't have a threat downlow, but if you watch the early JVG Knicks, you'll see that the "ugly ball" tag is very misleading.
To say that they used ISO because of a lack of a low post game is kinda a weak excuse. You use ISO's when you have a mismatch, your guy over the other guy.
