From SI: Signed by Rockets center Yao Ming, a seven-figure deal with Miramax books for his life story. Scheduled for a fall 2004 release, the book will tell how the values Yao learned growing up in a middle class family in Shanghai have guided him on and off the court. "It will be more than a sports memoir," says Jonathano Burnham, president of Miramax Books. "It's a cultural adventure as well." more: http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/88049p-80229c.html Basketball continues to be very, very good to Yao Ming. China's biggest export just signed a seven-figure deal to write a biography about his journey from his childhood in Shanghai to becoming the first foreign player selected as the NBA's No. 1 draft pick. Brillstein-Grey Vice Chairman John Liebman, who represented the 7-foot-5 Ming, told us, "I've been pursuing this project for some time. It's a story that extends beyond basketball." Miramax Books' Jonathan Burnham agreed that the tale, co-written with Ric Bucher, would be "a political and cultural adventure story as well." The towering memoir is due out in fall 2004.
I find the huge amount of endorsements he's getting to be amazing. If he can fulfill his potential and become one of the greatest Centers in the game, Yao Ming will be as big as Michael Jordan . . .
The Chinese media reported the amount of the deal was 1.5 mil. Team Yao's Eric Zhang said the the next day after this news being reported that it is not true. According to him "Even MJ couldnt get a deal like that, Yao's only a rookie"
In the Far East, a large percentage of the intellectual properties things one buys are bootleg copies so Yao might only see profits from the sales in the West. My company sells software and we have nil sales in mainland China but a huge number of users online there. On EBay, people sell bootleg DVDs that look almost exactly like the commercial ones (from Malaysia and Hong Kong.)
How does a 6'3" point guard 'steal' rebounds from a 7'5" center? If the offense moved Yao out of the paint then blame the offense, even if Steve waved him out that is still Rudy's fault for not correcting the behavoir. Steve may be able to jump through the ceiling but that doesn't give him the first shot at a rebound. He just uses quickness and atheleticism to get rebounds before players who are slower to react. Don't knock him for that hustle. Besides, i'm sure he's going to be hanging outside a little more with the new offense so Yao can iso on the poor centers of our opponents. On defense he won't be diving in as much because the coach will actually try to use the fast break and will want him at mid court for the pass. The only time he'll be getting defensive rebounds will be when his man blasts past him and misses the shot Which should make you haters very happy since it will give you a reason to gripe.
To my understanding, the $ sign, if left alone, means US dollars only. So $1-3 spans from about $8 RMB to $25 RMB.
nice news. looking forward to it. i think they'll try to have a translated version for the chinese market. or the other way around. anyways, they are right when they say it'll be "a political and cultural adventure story as well."
Well, don't get me wrong, Yao's developed into my favorite player! And I feel that Francis has done all he can and I doubt that he'll be anywhere close to wanting to "steal" Yao's spotlight... and the rebounds?... Yao's 7'5" at least. If SF's gonna steal his rebounds, sorry to say that's Yao's fault lol
I hope Yao doesn't over commit himself again this season. Reminds me of all the boxers that sign book, movie, & music deals only to get knocked the f*ck out in their next match because they didn't spend enough time training.
