Blech. I played there many times during the 90's and wasn't a fan. No AC and the smoke....GOD, the smoke... I would smell like smoke for days after playing there even after showering multiple times. Anyone remember The Mercury Room downtown? That place and Rudyard's are/were 2 of the rare places that still gave free drink coupons to the bands.
That's the place I was thinking of when I said Cliff's earlier. As of 6 or 7 years ago there was still one (the original?) in Brookshire off 10
Wasn't the first Jim Rome tour stop there when dude was big? The place was insane and packed that day and I skipped work for it. Good times.
While I don't think anybody here has ever been there (unless you are nearly 100) but I haven't seen anybody mention Luna Park. It was only around from 1924-34, but it had a real honest to goodness roller coaster, that frankly seems scarier than anything today (because I assume a lack of safety). It could be seen on the cover of "Houston Then and Now", in a pic taken downtown so it was pretty big coaster. {Spoiler for size} Spoiler
Just reading about the coaster now, it is very interesting. It was called the "skyrocket" and it predates the Coney Island Cyclone (which opened in 1926) and the drop was LARGER than the Texas Cyclone! (84ft vs 80 ft)
JR Morris, anyone? <img src="http://www.richmartinhomes.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Historic_Downtown_Houston.jpg" width="768" />
