If you're not implying its all Indian, then I fail to see the point you're trying to make.

You think rape is an "Indian" thing, and it doesn't happen elsewhere?

Is there even any evidence that incidence of rape in India is much higher than in all other countries? If so, I'd like to see it.

No I'm not implying all Indians. But I AM implying that I am under the impression that rape crimes happen more often in India than other parts of the world. What kind of evidence do you want? I'm sorry, I don't have a world map of rape. I just go back news reports.

How can you go by statistics when a good majority of rapes in india are apparently unreported??

But, it sounds like you're saying that if rape is more common in India, it's because of something biological or evolutionary about the Indians themselves. More likely it has a lot more to do with how well men in India can get away with rapes without criminal penalties or social reproach. Lots of men all over the world are willing to rape people if they think they can get away with it. But, if you do it in the States, you face greater risk of being caught, of being prosecuted, of facing long prison times followed by inclusion on a sex offender list, and of condemnation by your family and peers even if you're never convicted. Why do you think we have such a problem in the US Army now? It's not because we have a bunch of Indian soldiers. Perpetrators aren't punished and everybody knows it.

Yeah, in the Indian community having sex before marriage (even in the case of rape) is a huge taboo so I could see a large amount of rape being unreported. Hope they make a harsh example out of these rapists...

I'm a peaceful man, at least I try hard to be one, but this kind of evil ignorance makes me want to hurt somebody! They rape two teenage girls, leave them hanging dead from a tree, AND the police want to cover it up and won't do anything about it!?!? SMH!! I hope there is a VERY special place for these people when they die! I can't even imagine what the parents/family of these two young girls are going through right now!

The most infuriating thing is not the crime, unfortunately rape/murder happens all over the world, it's the judicial system over there that's as backward thinking as you can get! Everyone with authority over there that doesn't stand up. and at least try's to enforce the law is just as guilty as these cowardly criminals! I truly feel sorry for the women living in that part of the world!

Women traversing anywhere near India should always carry a sharp blade. If you are going to die might as well take a few of them with you.

Julian Assange rapes many girls and is called a hero. Double standard because these people are of color?

I'm not asking for it to happen tomorrow, but change needs to start somewhere, and Modi seems to be the right man for the job.

So now that you've seen the numbers and the evidence that you lacked before, what are your views now?

hmm... i've heard rape is practically a way of life in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan. not reported, of course. BUT, as there are a lack of western tourists, it gets no press. India is an area heavily frequented by tourists so is given more media attention and rightfully so. I wouldn't say it's anywhere near the highest rate of rape in the world but if even a few tourists get harassed, it's gonna be blown out of proportion. if it's accepted culturally, that's an even bigger problem. that being said, asia has never been on my list of places to visit so I don't know more details

That's the main problem with your analysis. You have never been to any of these places yet you claim authority as to knowing how it really is over there.

I have relatives. I have friends. And their first hand experiences.. what's wrong with that? Do you believe it's a safe place for women to roam compared to other touristy countries?

here's a few stats for you. these are the reported rapes in Delhi in 2012, with only one conviction...one that had press

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/10/delhi-rape-one-conviction-706-cases-2012_n_4419374.html

but keep defending the country in regards to prosecuting rapists

EDIT: before I get flamed, I would say this is an issue in many countries as well and not just isolated to India. India just happens to get more tourists and as a result more coverage than other countries where it may be as/more rampant

That's a very ignorant statement given our own culture. In the US, 25% of college women have been sexually assaulted or nearly were victims of it. Among college men, 35% admitted they would rape if they could get away with it. It's a way of life because these societies including ours are very patriarchal and misogynist (either overtly or institutionally i.e. our military). This kind of culture here and abroad 'accepts' it, but with women finally having a greater say around the world, perhaps this will change.

Many people in Asia abhor rape. These countries' legal systems aren't up to snuff, and their enforcement arms are riddled with corruption, sexist bureaucrats, inefficiencies, and incompetency. That can be said for some jurisdictions in the US too. Let he who is without sin caste the first stone, indeed.

And you refuse to visit Asia? Where nearly 2/3 of the world lives, which comprises 1/3 of the total land mass on our planet? With countries like Japan, China, etc? I never understand people with this kind of mindset.

I went when I was little... 7-9 ish. I remember it being like crowded like a festival or rock concert, except everywhere you went.

Also, I remember walking along a river behind the hotel I was staying at and seeing people pissing and ****ting right in the river and thinking that was disgusting. Then I turn my head to the left and there are the hotel guys washing the dishes in the river. Never again.
