Reports seem consistant that Dunleavy is (or shortly will be) the new coach due to his long relationship wuth CD. If true that means the owner is letting someone else call the shots on something this important? I just don't buy that. In fact I wonder if their, and Rudy's, long relationship is a negative? I believe the final decision will be Alexander's. I believe JVG will be the future.
I don't believe Les has ever had a problem with letting someone else call the shots. He's pretty much stayed out of the way and let them do their job since becoming owner.
Crazy Joe, I dont think the Rockets have lost respect for RudyT, just that it may have been beneficial that he step down for all concerned. If RudyT and CD didnt have Les's ear..they wouldnt be here. Hell they may chose JVG, even if Les is more impressed with Mike. But Im sure Les has made it clear, as to what he expects.
Throughout this process I have expected the coach to emerge with much of CD's 'power'. I don't expect anyone or anything to get in the way of this owner's power. That said, I just cannot accept the notion CD is calling this hiring. If it is MD then I will be quite surprised -- unless Dumbleavy really has sold himself to the owner. So, JVG? Or is JVG 'coming' with so many demands that he is unhirable anywhere?
If Clutch is right that Van Gundy is the one with the second interview, why would you think Dunleavy is the one to be hired?
Where is that posted? I'd love to ready it. I'm not being sarcastic but I haven't seen the posted by Clutch.
I don't think this second interview with VG means anything. Rockets are probably just doing this to give VG one more chance to bail himself out and to get VG to convince them as to not take MD. My guess, its not anyone really knows what is going on.
I agree. After reading the article, that option popped into my head. It has been noted that Mikey was very impressive and that JVG was less than impressive. So it does not make sense that JVG would get a 2nd interview and MD wouldn't, considering the fact that their coaching careers are arguably even. Personally, I feel Dunleavy is a slightly better option for us over Gundy (not by much though), yet, I would feel comfortable with either coach. Lets just get this over with so we can start debating on who to trade Cuttino to, how to kill Moochie and making more polls about Yao.
JV- It seems like a no brainer to me. The major issue is not X's and O's it is $'s. The Rockets already know what they can get Dunleavy for - about $3m-$4m is my guess. IMO, they only need to interview JVG to see if he will work as cheaply as Dunleavy (he won't). IOW, there is only the need to interview the one of them (JVG) to see what his price is. If it's too high, you hire the other one (MD).
Pretty much it. It's a no brainer for the Rockets. CD is comfortable with Dunleavy. Dunleavy is cheaper. Dunleavy is a nice guy. He is exactly what this team needs. Maybe he can bake CD a bundt cake. It's all so fuzzy and warm. Maybe he and CD will go fishing together.
Alright, I won't argue it. Everyone seems pretty set on believing that the Rockets aren't willing to pay for a coach. I'm going to let it rest until they do hire a coach and they announce what the contract is worth. My gut says it will be Van Gundy for a pretty rich contract. But, we'll see. If I'm wrong, expect a thread from me about it. If I'm right, I expect to see a very long thread about how everyone's misjudged Les (though he'll still get slammed for not getting Brown, I'm sure).
I think it is prudent to watch your money. I don't think coaches are worth 7, 8 mil/ yr either. I was not upset when we did not bid for LB. We could still pay JVG 5+ mils or MD a little less. RC was on the last year of a $6 mil/ 3 yrs contract so he might be the less expensive one of the bunch. I would be very surprised if we won't at least talk to him! This salary escalation is crazy! Much like the players' salaries ! It is us who pay in the end!
the whole dunleavy thing just seems to be part of the "good ol' boy, keep it in the family, we want change but not too drastic" attitude of the managment. maybe dawson feels like he can be more in control of dunleavy rather than JVG since dunleavy played under him at one time. the whole thing just makes no sense to me. if we had our stuff together half as good as detroit than we would be alright. maybe detroit handled it pretty underhandedly, but at least they got their guy.
clutch's article implies that he will not be even talked to. that just sounds dumb to me? why wouldnt you at least talk to him. do the rockets really just like limiting their options? kind of sadistic.
O, there will be a thread about how we won't have the money to resign Yao. I'm with you on this. Just because we couldn't get into a bidding war with a team paying 15 mill less in salaries coming off an EC Finals season doesn't mean we're not going to pay our coach. Brown is getting 5 mill plus incentives that would probably be easy to achieve in the Eastern Conference. I think JVG vs. MD will still be about whomever CD and Les like better. Everything Almu has said points to JVG not being much of a money guy (driving a '95 Honda Civic until it got totalled by a plane). That said, Dunleavy could still be CD's guy, just because Van Gundy's personality is said to not be winning people over.
