OK, after playing a couple games of Madden on my XBOX I began to watch some TV. After watching for an hour or so and I guess I fell asleep while watching. Well I fell asleep on the floor of my bedroom and stayed asleep there for a couple hours before waking up. Well when I woke up it wasn't really time to wake up because it was 2:23 AM and here is what freaked me out. After waking up and realizing that I had fell asleep on the floor I tried to get up and get in to my bed but couldn't! Every time I tried to get my legs just would not stay stable and I kept crashing to the floor. I tried 4 or 5 times but never managed to get up because of my legs were real wobbly and weak. I eventually used my arms to drag my body from the floor to my bed and saved myself from screaming and waking up my roommates to come help me. Then when I woke up today everything was fine. Anyone ever had something like this happen to them before or have any idea what may have caused it? Now let me kill some of your theories before they even start. One, I was not drunk and have not drank in several weeks. Two, I was not dreaming because I have the carpet burn on my knee to remind me of repeatedly falling down. Three, I don't believe my legs were "asleep" because nothing was on top of them or anything like that. Any other suggestion?
My biology teacher was talking about this once, it has something to do with temporary paralysis that only occurs when you are asleep. I can't remember the exact name. It's just like when you wake up and can't move an arm or hand, and you have to do it by yourself.
One of three things kump out: 1) Most likely; your legs were asleep. I know nothing was on you, but if you were on the floor long enough, and in certain positions, the very lack of give combined with your body weight would impinge flow, resulting in a feeling of dead weight flesh, certainly enogh to cause problems walking for a bit. Question: what position were you in? 2) You tried to get up too fast after being recumbant for a while, causing an ususual but not unknown area specific loss of sensation..Normally we black out, or get dizzy, but in this case it make have only been minor, and you may only have been aware of the effect of loss of nervous sensation/rwaction from your legs. 3) You may have temporarily deadened a nreve receptor in your lower back or elsewhere while lying on the hard floor. Either way, unless it becomes a repeated problem, nothing to really worry about, IMO.
Maybe it was because all the blood collected in your upper body/head area and it was a shock to your legs that you were getting up and the blood had to circulate down there again. It probably has to do with sleeping on the floor or your sleeping position. Or, your just plain weird or ill.
Not sure what was wrong with you, but this reminds me of the time I had strep throat last summer. One morning, when I was at my worst condition, I woke up and I felt delirious. It's really hard to explain, but I couldn't move my limbs. When I tried to move my limbs I could actually feel my insides shifting around, but still being unable to move. It was kind of like a waterbed effect I think, I remember laying there feeling like I was broken and not being able to talk or move to get any help. I just laid there for about 2 hours totally freaked out... Then out of nowhere I re-gained my strength and was able to get up and get a glass of water. I can't remember what my temp. was when I went to the clinic, but it was more than 1-2 degrees over 100...that I know for sure...
Something like that has happened to me a few times. When I would sleep in the back seat of the car and wake up, I could see and hear everything. I would want to sit up or even move, but I can't. It's scary because I would go into a panic-type mode because I couldn't even breathe. Nothing would move, i couldn't even ask my brother or anyone else for help. After about 30 seconds, though, it went away. Very strange and somewhat scary, although I think the worst thing that could happen would be falling back asleep.
answered my question, macbeth. i went out a to a club a few months ago had too many drinks (unusual for me), went home, and went to sleep. the next morning, i got out of bed and went upstairs to do my morning rituals and all of a sudden everything, EVERYTHING turns black... as if i had lost sight or something. i really REALLY freaked out. being dizzy, i was crashing into walls and damn near fell down the stairs over the rail. i managed to walk uncontrollably to a bed and lay there. i seriously thought that i was blind. scary stuff! i ended up falling asleep for a hour. woke up, everything was fine. weird.
I've only really, really had it happen once, and it was awful timing. I had just taken a room in a student residence, but not moved in yet ( moved part way through the year), and was painting my room. I met this really attractive girl who offered to help me paint, and despite the fact that she had a boyfriend we got involved over the next while...but on the 1st night of painting, she offered to let me crash with her. So in the middle of the night, I get up from her bed to go to the washroom, and the next thing I'm aware of I just know that everything under my side/back etc. feels hard. Don't know why...felt like I was dreaming, but gradually I became aware that it feels hard because I am laying on the floor , halfway out of her room, and the voice I thought was in my dream was her freaking out and asking if I was alright, frightened as she was by the fact that a guy she had only known for a day had gotten up from bed in the middle of the night and fallen flat on the floor and lay there as if dead. It was sooo surreal. I guess it's what fainting feels like, but it has never happened since, andI am glad. Freaked me out, to say nothing of this girl. Strange, one of the most surreal feelings I've ever had.
That falls under what I explained, too. We had a big, long discussion one day about this in biology. It was a long time ago, though, so I cant really remember much.
I remember my psychology teacher telling me about that. I am going with that assumption and relieving myself of any worry I had.
You may have been abducted by aliens, and given the weeble wobble leg test. They'll be baaaaacccccckkkkkk----
It only happens in my dreams. I can't move my legs to walk when I dream. I just stand still with out moving, and I hate that sensation.
It happened this morning to me....its such a great feeling, and I really don't know why it is. I just love swinging my dead arm around with my other arm.
i have that happen to me every once in awhile. now it just bothers me. id say over the past 10 years ive had about 20-30 occurences of it. havnt had one in maybe a year.
Happens to me every night. The only way I can sleep really comfortably is when my arms are above my head while I'm laying on my stomach or side. Something about that position (I'm guessing having to do with the blood flow) causes this phenomenon every morning.
