Since everyone seems to think I'm just a raving lunatic, I thought I'd make this post. I am not saying if you don't get Brown, the Rockets are screwed. Personally, I think Mike Dunleavy could end up doing the job in Houston that Houston needs right now. I'm just not as sure about Dunleavy as I am about Brown, Riley, and Jackson. I look at the big picture and I saw a window of opportunity that doesn't come along everyday. You're moving into a new arena, you've got two young stars in Yao Ming and Steve Francis, and the coach that most people inside NBA circles think is one of the top coaches in the game is available. I just don't see why you don't go all out. If ever there was a time to splurge, it was now. I don't see, and if you have been reading a lot of the press releases today neither does a lot of the media around the country, why you adopt a slow approach to hiring a coach when you could have a top coach in the game for $6million. Joe Dumars was NBA GM of the year last year because he knows how to handle that situation when you are so blessed to have it fall in your lap. Houston just seemed to get outclassed to me and it seems like it is just another in a long line of mistakes this franchise has made in the post-Hakeem era. I really can't think of many moves this franchise has made post 2000 that made me say, "Wow. Now that was a smart move." Personally, I think I've been very patient with this franchise for 3 years now. At what point should fans expect more out of their franchise? I think today is that day.
Great article Clutch. It's so sad to see the truth, though. Mabey they have something up their sleeve? Who knows.
If saying Brown can't bring championship for Detroit, or Brown has such such weaknesses... I'd say, it's a sour grape.
when you hear a "source", it's always questionable to how truthful it is. The Rockets know it would take at least four million a year to get Larry Brown. If the Rockets thought they could get Brown for three million a year, then they need to check themselves. I believe Larry thinks the Pistons will be easier to get to the Finals than the Rockets. Especially at first. Also, I don't think they wanted Silas that bad. They certanly wouldn't have interviewed him so much later if they did. If they thought all four coaches were going to wait around for the Rockets to choose before they accepted jobs, then the Rockets brass was naive. I have a feeling they felt they were all very even, or they just didn't see the Pistons firing Carslile, and obviously already talking Brown before it happened. let's hope JVG or Dunleavy can get the job done, and take us back to the promised land.
Well thats been the one thing I wasn't sure about Larry Brown... Clutch's last sentence in his article says it all in my opinion... "Brown was it, and a guy like that doesn't come on the market but every 4-5 seasons". You are exactly right, he'll be there in 4-6 years(have to add that last season)... This is his last go around at 62... I just wasn't sure he would stick around for more than 4-6 seasons anyway... I have always posted that after LB, I would take Mike Dunleavy and then JVG... I just think Dunleavy will come be a change of pace that would only help the Rockets... He's a disciplined enough coach, yet very respected by most of his players...(you try to coach that Portland team he had)... Mike Dunleavy will work well with CD and Rudy T. as well as Les Alexander... He's the guy I'd like to have in Houston... He'll get this team to where it needs to be, could also keep an asst. coach or 2 from Rudy T's reign...
If it was really that high then teams would be falling over themselves to get him. Yet they don't. They respect him, but really is he a basketball genius? He's been to a couple of conference finals and got blasted in the NBA Finals. That's the extent of his success on a high level. I just think people are overvaluing this guy. But if people really want Larry Brown we should get Rick Carlisle, who is a cheaper, and younger Brown. Why the Rockets won't interview this guy is beyond me.
Teams weren't falling all over themselves?!?!? Detroit, in a spectacular and almost unprecedented move, fired their coach reportedly just so that they could get him, even though they were coming off of back to back 50 win seasons with little talent, and the coach had gotten COY votes in each of his two years. Every other team who could afford him is reported to have expressed interest, and as per CD, every team with an opning in theor right mind would want him...as did the Rockets, who made him their top choice. RM, I usually enjoy your take, but this I don't get. I have rarely seen a coach pursued as Brown was, and it was over in, what, 5 days? 4?
Ridiculous: no $ to hire LB? But how much we pay Moochie??? Clutch said that Rox can't hire LB because he want $5M a year. But how much we pay Moochie every year? How much we pay Rice every year? I mean if we lose LB simply because Les wants to save $1M or $2M, this would be one of the most ridiculous business decisions I've ever heard. WTF.
dude my key point actually is not about LB (in fact I am for JVG, not Brown.), but about the mentality of how they make decisions and do business. Understand?
I know it is not the way things should happen, or how they would play out if it were done over again, but the bottom line is, what just happened here is common practice these days in many if not all of the MAJOR sports.
