gram: You might be missing the point. Rich and Charlie aren't just nice. They are probably the best and most knowledgeable sports talk guys in this part of the country let alone city. Just because you don't like the fact that they aren't skilled at basketball commentary doesn't make them awful at their jobs. Most baseball and football fans will tell you they are extremely good at covering those sports and, while you and I may be biased, basketball just doesn't have the following in Houston the other sports do. Last week, they went nearly 10 hours of on-air time with out ONE caller who wanted to talk about the Rockets. Now, that wasn't including the football guys, etc. That was open line time ONLY. When you don't get callers to discuss them, the conversation doesn't form. Callers drive the shows. I agree that they should take more than a passing interest in basketball and the Rockets but callers should take the time to force them to take more than a passing interest in it and then they'll discuss it. ------------------ The way to use life is to do nothing through acting, The way to use life is to do everything through being. - Lao-Tzu
jeff, i think you may be a bit biased 'cause you play put-put with them or whatever. they are NOT the most knowledgable sports guys on houston radio let alone the nation. that comment is just ludicrous! they have a passing knowledge of baseball, and(i'll give them this) seem to know alot on football of all types. but why do callers HAVE to force them to talk basketball??? other fellows on the radio take calls, and then run with them as far as sports talk. charlie and rich act as if calls about basketball are a nuisense. i dont care about what rich's family saw on tv that night. i want to hear about sports if i am tuning in to a sports show. i don't mind some non-sports related talk, but when they ignore callers and talk about crap?!?!? c'mon, that is not good sports radio. ------------------
Actually, I see Charlie at almost every Rockets game. ------------------ Maybe all the rulers are wrong. Current Rocket's Salary & Contract Info
gram, relax--Lance and John talk about more 'crap' than anybody...don't get me wrong, I like them and all, and a lot of it's pretty funny, but when I want just straight-up sports talk I think Rich and Charlie are the best. True--a lot of what they (Charlie, specifically) have to say isn't exactly optimistic concerning the Rockets, but I think that's good when you consider that we as Rocket fans tend to give the team a little more credit than they deserve. BTW I think a lot of you guys are underestimating Charlie's bball knowledge--back in the day he used to do the post game shows on 740 (Rich also) ------------------
gram: Charile DOES attend every Rockets game and he has been consulted on several books about baseball because he can quote stats, scores and info from as far back as the 30's. The guy is a veritable encyclopedia when it comes to baseball. And prempeh hit the nail on the head when he said Lance and John are far worse about having non-sports related dicussions. They know it and they enjoy it but it isn't about sports. Palillo and Lord have been offered gigs all over the country doing sports talk and turned them down because they like it in Houston. I don't care for their pessimism and I wish they talked more about basketball but that's it. I didn't say they were the best sports talk guys in this part of the country just because I think so. They are well-regarded in cities all over the US. I didn't just pull that random compliment out of the air. As for why callers have to call in and force the issue, it's pretty simple. If they start talking basketball and the next caller says, "I want to talk about the Astros," conversation changed, end of story. I've heard them start to talk about the Rockets on occassion and then have a caller change the subject almost immediately. I can't count the number of times they have openly complained about the lack of basketball calls on the air. Is that their fault? As for me playing "put-put," now you are just being stupid. I said that my friend and partner knows Rich and plays golf with him on Sunday. You originally said that you didn't post out of anger, but it obviously quickly disintegrated into anger after someone (me) disagreed with your assertions. I'm not sure how you came into this wealth of knowledge on sports talk radio and how it should be, but you are making blanket assertions based on your limited assessment of them as hosts. Many people on this board, myself included, have been listening to these guys for years and years on Houston radio. They didn't get to be where they are by sucking. Fortunately for you, there are options if you don't like them. You see, the great thing about a radio is that it has a knob. My suggestion to you is, the next time you don't like what Rich and Charlie are saying, turn it. Should solve your problem. ------------------ The way to use life is to do nothing through acting, The way to use life is to do everything through being. - Lao-Tzu
With David Barron of the Chronicle throwing in some interesting fodder in his past two columns, and with this discussion going on here I am going to throw my own two cents in. First off, on the 610 not talking Rockets issue: Jeff has pretty much said it all. More Rockets calls will generate more discussion. And when Feigen from the Chronicle is on in the Afternoon Drive there need to be more Rocket calls for him, not just "Around the NBA" stuff. On what I mainly wanted to throw my opinion in on, is the current shakeup @ Clear Channel. In the past 2 months Clear Channel has given Russ Small and John O' Reilly their walking papers to pare their sports staff down. 740, which until recently has traditionally had the largerst sports staff in the city, has normally carried 6 people on their Sports staff. With the merger and firings they are back to 6. (Tom Franklin, Matt Thomas, Kris O'Donnell, Robert Hensley, Carl Dukes, and Andre Smith). It will be interesting to see how they bounce from each station, especially with them having 2 shows on at the same time. 950's SportsPage from 5-8pm and 740's SportsBeat from 7-11pm. David Barron has been a long running speculator that someone in town would try to go up against KILT with their own sports station. In the end money will be the biggest determinant, but there are some factors that I see that lean towards KBME going to sports from Old People format. First off, Clear Channel now owns the flagship rights to 5 teams, Astros (for 1 more yr. plus 2 option years), Rockets, Aeros, Comets and Thunderbears. When it was 950/700. KSEV carried a lot of the extra sports like Thunderbears and overflow Comets. Now 790 is the overflow station, except they have a better overall signal. Another factor is that Clear Channel is a huge conglomerate that owns the rights to Jim Rome, and just started their own sports network affiliated with FOX (FOX Sports Radio). Many Clear Channel stations have been told that they need to carry FOX Sports Radio (Among them WNLS Talahasse (sp), XTRA-AM and KXTA-AM SD & LA). With KBME being open/'up in the air' I see 790 being used as sports. ESPN Radio has been making moves to buy up stations in large markets (AM 1110 LA KSPN-AM, FM 103.3 in Dallas, and rumored to be buying WEVD 1050 New York), and with FOX being the newcomer I'm sure they would to capitalize on the Houston market before ESPN has a realistic chance to. ESPN is on in Galveston on AM 1540 but their signal is very weak and doesn't get great Houston metro-area coverage. Back to KBME. With numerous flagship rights and possible corporate intervention the sports seem bright in the future. I see this happening: KTRH as the 50,000 watt Blowtorch of Houston keeping their extensive Astros coverage and flagship rights. KBME flipping to sports, getting the Les Alexander trifecta, and the Aeros being a wildcard as either being kept or dumped. KPRC would dump the Sportspage so they could more effectively carve out their niche as Houston's Talk Station. And KTRH would move SportsBeat to 790, so KTRH could become more news focused as they say they are- "NewsRadio 740 KTRH". I see KBME's (or maybe KHFS (Houston Fox Sports) introductory sports line-up as this. Weekdays 7-11am Tony Bruno (FOX Network) 11-2pm Jim Rome (If they go Sports they would have to pull Rome from KILT to have any chance) 2-7pm Local 7-7am A mix between Play-by-Play and FOX Sports programming. Weekends Start out as FOX Sports and Play-by-Play with local shows from 4-7pm on Sat & Sun. Between Sports reporting on KTRH, and shows on 790 from regular weekdays to postgame slots there would plenty for 6 people to do. If there is overflow on 790, 950 would pick it up. If the above senario with Clear Channel does not happen, then I see a possible Plan B. AM 700 KSEV is up for sale. Whoever buys them (other than CBS/Viacom- owners of KILT & KIKK) could flip then to fulltime sports, and then if they wanted some established local presence go out and hire Russ Small &/or John O' Reily. 700 has a great daytime signal with an OK nighttime signal, and if it would go to sports I see the buyer probably being ESPN/ABC. They only own 1 other Houston radio station and that's AM 1590 Radio Disney. Plus that would keep with their pattern of buying up stations and making them fulltime ESPN Radio affiliates. For the sports fans out there, more stations covering sports means better variety and competition. However, as what drives American the almighty dollar will most likely make this decision no matter what our hearts and minds want us to think and believe.
