Dunleavy can't control the team, can't make good decision and JVG can make his players work their a** off for him. Damn, I didn't realize Les and CD are so dumb Forget about it, if they end with Mike Dunleavy while JVG is available. Why they need replace Rudy? Cause Dunleavy are same type of guy as Rudy!!!!!!!
Let's Temper the Negativity, PLEASE!!! Everybody should take comfort in knowing that we have two VERY OUTSTANDING candidates in the running. Moreover, our two candidates are our top candidates from day one. Both of them do have their stylistic differences. And if there is anything worth debating its which "style" is best suited for the Rockets? Personally, I think JVG, "stylistically" will be the better coach for the Rox. Why? 1. JVG has experience working with big men 2. JVG has disciplinarian written over his brow 3. JVG is a very very intelligent coach (moreso than most people on these boards are giving him credit for). 4. JVG's emphasis on defense and half court sets will have efficacy in the run-and-gun West (think about what Byron Scott did by running the Princeton offense in the East). Dunleavy is also a wonderful candidate. In Dunleavy, I think we will get: 1. more productivity from our backcourt tandem 2. enhanced versatility in Yao by involving him in custom plays 3. an easier transition from the RudyT years 4. a team that will be well equipped to compete against the premier teams in the West. Both candidates are terrific, IMO. Whoever ends up getting the job, I will root for. I hope that negative posters on cc.net will likewise drop their biases and lend their support to our future coach. theSAGE
Isn't that the truth? What kind of message does that send to the players? "Well, we were hoping to bring in a great coach for you guys, but that plan fell through, so here's Mike, who lives nearby and REALLY wanted the job."
ill take any one over larry smith c'mon people. and realize if yall keep f'ing with CD and les mind by writting this crap about Mike D or JVG he would go with larry smith.
The disaster continues....... What a bunch of bullsh!t. How can you be happy with JVG and MD as your last ditch candidates?!?!? The Rockets flat out dropped the ball on Brown and Silas. Bonehead if you ask me. The lack of aggressiveness has gotten us a 2nd tier coach at best. Sit on your ass.... Miss the boat...... This is not a good day. Also.... Why the hell does it take us FOREVER to make a damn decision when it takes the Pistons 2 damn days to fire and hire?!?!?!?
If the players aren't going to respect their coach, INDEPENDENT of who he is, then they shouldn't be on the team to begin with. A coach commands respect by being a knowledgable, prepared, positive leader. He EARNs respect by leading his team down the path of success. To think that respect is so easily earned by just having a good reputation is total BS. Look across the league if you need anecdotes. 1. Ask Tim Hardaway about his feelings toward Pat Riley 2. Ask most Knick fans about their feelings toward Pat Riley 3. Ask Allen Iverson about his opinion on Larry Brown Both Dunleavy and JVG are tough TASKSETTERS. Moreover, JVG will not stand for incalcitrant players. The path to earning respect is no different for Brown, JVG OR Dunleavy. The NBA and the NBA's critics are very fickle. If Detroit plays 500 ball or sub-500 ball, let's just see how many people will proclaim Brown to be a dud. Moreover, I'm rather surprised no one has mentioned how "Brown's teams" become rather FORMULAIC after a couple years. Could this be what motivates Brown to jump ship after ship after ship? i.e. KNOWING that his formula has run its course? I mean, how many teams DIDN'T know that, "if we can shut down or contain AI, we can beat the 76ers?" Ironically, if you ask me who was Brown's STRONGEST team, it would be the Pacers of old... with Rik Smits and Reggie Miller. Concidence of strenghts relative to the Rox? I think not. Point being, our talent will carry us farther than any coach's reputation can. A coach can only do so much as far as preparing his/her team and maximing the talents of the players. Beyond that, it's up to the 5 on the court to do their thing. IMHO, both Dunleavy and JVG, for reasons of having the time to "watch" and analyze the Rockets will be able to bring a fresh gameplan to this team. That 'outsiders' perspective will do wonders to enhancing and optimizing the performance of this team. Contrast that, with say Larry Smith, who worked w/in the context of his predecessor, but to no avail. Btw our two candidates, I think Dunleavy will be the more creative of the two in keeping our offense fresh and versatile. I don't think there is anything formulaic about the Dunleavy gamebook and I admire him for his creativity... esp. during playoff time. however, the most impt thing is that we have the talent to pull off an array of creative plays. The Mobley-Francis open court alley-oop is a thing of beauty. Imagine if we script more plays like that off the inbounds pass??? Dunleavy has the recipe for that kind of style. For those of you clamoring for more discipline and a good spanking now and then, JVG is probably the better man. Don't let his haggard looks fool you. He's a pretty vocal guy. Educated in the school of Riley Motivation 101, JVG really does command from the sideline. If JVG is our coach, you can be sure to see him urging his team to 1.push the ball upcourt (i.e. dictate tempo), 2.call out plays, 3.correct defensive lapses immediately. JVG is more of a hands on coach vs. Dunleavy. Therefore, if you believe in the "command and control" style of, say, the military, then JVG is the guy for us. If you believe in freedom and creativity, then Dunleavy is probably a better fit. What an interesting future it's gonna be! theSAGE
Not dumb (necessarily) just indecisive. The Pistons not brilliant (Cleaves, White) but very decisive. Advantage: Decisive Detroit. Les (and CD) need to select JVG and/or pull a miracle rabbit out of his (their) hat(s)!
This is sad. MD - Can't win with all of the talent they had in Portland. Yes he had Rod but I don't think he is that much better than Rudy. JVG - Who knows, may quit mid-season again? Is this any difference than someone that cheats on their spouse with someone else? The someone else always asks: Would they cheat on me too? Yes he coaches D, but who wants all 60 point games. The Rox had one of their best D years this year. Our biggest problem was that we couldn't get the pumpkin in to the round circle thing? I guess, we'll try to keep others from doing it even more. Rick Carlise - I hear there were several issues with him. Players couldn't get along (BFD - everyone says that players are whiners, while I don't know if that is true or not, how do you qualify this one with out knowing all of the details and the history?) Claims that he didn't get along with Dumars? (Same here, don't know the details). But then again, he did take a NO TALENT team (sorry Wallace fans, he is great but isn't Duncan) and made the playoffs. Made the team good even after Stackhouse left. I don't know how well he would fit? Then what do we do? Re-hire Rudy? That is a wonderful point. I am not sure how long Larry Bolter would stay here. But he is a really good coach.
Part I Well, to use your analogy... JVG was intially betrothed to not one but TWO wives. For argument's sake, let's call the first wife "Checkitta" and the second wife "Pat." Checkitta was more senior in the "wife chain", and as number one wife, she had the authority to tell JVG what to do. Nevertheless, she chose not to boss JVG around and instead supported JVG's dreams to the fullest degree. However, one day, Checkitta, for reasons of not paying her cable bill, found herself deported from Knickland. In all fairness to JVG, the cable gods decided to give JVG a new wife, who we'll call "Laden." Unfortunately for JVG, the cable gods didn't tell him that Laden was named as such b/c she was laden with disease. Everything Laden touched would fester and decay. And so it wasn't too long before Laden and Pat would meet. Predictably, Pat began to lose her vitality. And with Pat's demise, all of Knickland also began to decay. Laden's free spending ways condemned all of Knickland to a future of powder of ash and there was nothing JVG could do about it... sad, ain't it??? theSAGE
MacBeth is my alter-ego. A little creative writing goes a long way to spice up the cc.net boards theSAGE
I've always been positive about the Rockets management - but I have to admit they are turning this into a train wreck. They did superb on the Yao negotiations, now all the sudden they seem to have lost their minds and are going downhill fast.
