thank goodness the warriors didnt land SVG, hollins or karl. they would've been better than us next year. i still can't believe we are holding on to mchale. but at least he has some coaching experience, should still be better than kerr.
That's a lot of money to throw at a rookie coach. Kerr should split part of his salary to PJax as thanks for raising his stocks.
Kidd was one of the greatest PGs, and you know how much he understands the game and how much players respect him. Giving him a head coach job is still a gamble but pretty low risk. What has Steve Kerr done? That big shot? I mean they fired Marc Jackson, another great PG, and give a lifetime role player a 5 year deal? Maybe he's smart, to be picked up by Bulls and Spurs for title runs. But I certainly don't sense any of his bright mind from his commentator gig. Good luck to Warriors and Steve, but I don't think he will do better than Jackson. That being said, maybe he'll still out-coach our player's coach.
Yes, I remember Greg Popovich and Pat Riley in their playing days. They were all first team almost every year. Solid point. The fact that Kerr has five rings and played for Phil Jackson and Greg Popovich are hardly a blip on the resume.
1) Pop was the lead assistant for a 5-6 year period under one of the best coaches of all time (Larry Brown). And he was the GM of the Spurs for a while before taking over for Bob Hill. So he had PLENTY of coaching experience. And Pop is a perfect example of a guy learning the ropes and working his way up. Poor example. 2) Riley was initially hired as an "assistant" coach under Westphal. Although he became the interim HC shortly into the season b/c Magic hated Westphal, obviously the interim title relieved a lot of the pressure. Steve Kerr is taking over (with headlining news of his courtship of 2 highly profiled teams) the Warriors with the pressure of winning immediately. Again, poor example. Again, both of the guys you mentioned were hired not to take over a team like Steve Kerr is (or JKidd for that matter). But hey, goes to tell you the competency of coaches nowadays where you don't have to work your way up as much.
Not only that, but Kerr wasn't really a traditional PG in the way that Kidd was. But I do think the Warriors are the safer bet. The Knicks are too unpredictable right now. Of course he's going to be embarrassed if he doesn't at least get out of the first round next year.
Why, just because he slobs the knob of every team playing against the Rockets and talks about James Harden as "probably being a Top 15, maybe Top 12 player in the NBA"? (Even I, angry at Harden's drunken no-defense passivity in the playoffs, wouldn't have dropped him that far down the list.) I won't miss Kerr too much, either.
I know, just imagine how great a coach Robert Horry will be! He played for Rudy T, Phil Jackson and Pop! He has 7 rings!
