Well, goodbye Guzman for sure. Next would be Presley. I'd call up Wates & Grossman (I'd wait one more month on Singleton, even though the team needs him). I had to turn off the game, I was getting so mad. Inexcusable to have 11 hits, 3 walks, an error, and a WP, and have zero runs in 9 innings without even hitting into a double play. And of course, the bullpen pitches well in a low leverage situation.
Singleton needs to come on up. Austin Wates should get a chance too while we are at it. Hoes has gotten his look. Not as if I think Wates is the long term answer, but he has hit at every level in the minors, give him a shot. Presley is a 4th outfielder at best, and that's probably being generous, I see absolutely no reason for him getting any PA's over 2 young outfielders who have at least some chance to contribute long term. Springer is starting to get results, he's still striking out far too much even with my liberal views on K's. I'm willing to give him all season to let him work and adapt. Sending him down serves no purpose IMO.
It was good to see him actually get a couple of two strike hits last night. His swinging from the heels approach is not going to consistently work at the major league level. Also, it's not like he is striking out on bad pitches (e.g. way outside). He is simply missing them. I agree that sending him down serves no purpose.
So when do they just send Springer down before they break him, trade him in a year for pieces and he blows up somewhere else? AKA the Jordan Lyles treatment.
FWIW Jordan Lyles was given 65 starts over 3 seasons, and showed no real sign of improvement. It certainly looks like a terrible trade right now, but unlike most fans I don't do revisionist history, and most fans didn't have a major problem when they traded him.
The only whine here is the stuff Porter keeps in the clubhouse. The Lyles stuff is just bad luck. This team has a lot of that going for it.
Using BR's Play Index, there have been 20 instances in the last 100 years of a team getting at least 11 hits, scoring zero runs, and not grounding into a single double play. Edit: 3 times for a team to reach base 14+, have total bases of 15+, & have 0 runs in a 9 inning game without a GIDP. http://www.baseball-reference.com/p...6criteria=&firstteamgames=&ajax=1&submitter=1
