I'm kinda being a woman about this (ok, ladies on bbs can kill me), but I'll be utterly depressed if we fail to land Brown. He is by far the best teacher available and we need that more than anything. To have Francis be shocked at Rudy's resignation, to have Francis then call Brown, and then for us to NOT get Brown. . . .that would be just too much.

I know that there are other fine coaches out there, and some might ultimately do better. But right now, I really friggin want Larry Brown. Why? He would guarantee the end of dribblemania.

If I had to choose between (i) dribblemania with guaranteed playoff spot, or (ii) guarantee of no dribblemania with no guarantee of playoffs, it's a no brainer. I'll do anything to get dribblemania off my TV. Well, anything but turn off my TV.

Les, just for me, it's time to pony up 8.5 mill per year and get this guy.

I think a combination of C and D is it. What coach in their right mind would take Detroit over Houston?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    Rockets Head Coach--Larry Brown
    Rockets Assistant Coach--Rick Carlisle

Brown coaches here for a few years (hopefully a championship), and then turns over the reigns to Carlisle??????

    And MoTown is ............... ??

    LOL, just a thought.

My dark horse would be Avery Johnson.

Realistically, Dunlevey and Silas are still smarter coaches than Rudy. So, we're still better off if we get them.

    Machiavelli?

Screw Machiavelli. What about the Magnificent 7?

Johnny Dawkins used to quote Machiavelli all the time "Where the willingness is great..blah blah blah..." He was just another pseudo-intellectual and worse, he sucked as a basketball player.

Id much rather have a man with no fear (read Daredevil with eyes) than a sniveling coward who couldn't say no to his GM and is on national TV begging to save his job (read NBC game of the week in a distant land far far away...... read Portland).

We share exactly the same view here.

First of all, I don't have any ill feeling toward Dunleavy. I think he is a gentleman.

But, I swear to GOD, right here, right now. If the Rockets ends up hiring Dunleavy as the next head coach, I will do whatever a human being can do to trash the Rockets organization all over the world, until I am banned by the Internet, period. And I will seek any opportunity to knee down in front of Rudy for his forgiveness.

    Crappy news. Van Gundy, please!

Edit: nevermind sounds like Van Gundy might be gone too.

Yep, unless it was really Rudy's decision, we should have kept him.

If you consider the "smarts" of a coach as the total measure of his ability and completely rule out things like experience, motivational skills, ability to attract free agents, scouting, etc.

Here's a pretty objective measure. Silas playoff record (13-16). Dunleavy playoff record (31-28). Rudy T playoff record (51-39). Without Brown or Van Gundy (in my opinion) the only thing that's really going to make this team better is roster changes.

All I can say is Indiana went on to their first NBA finals, Kansas won the national title, and Philadelphia went from worst to first. I don't care how the man leaves the franchise two years down the road if he gets those kind of immediate results. Maybe it has something more to do with the people that come in after Brown leaves.

    You have to start somewhere.

Everybody was a rookie coach once.

If we got Silas or Dunleavy, I wouldn't mind. But at least consider Avery for an assistant.

I agree completely here. I was watching "The Matrix" for the first time (lol) over at my parents' house when my dad blurts out this news. Of course, I thought he didn't know what he was talking about and then I read about it. Talk about getting punched in the gut. Then (after "The Matrix" was over and taking a nap), I read this thread in its entirety . It looks like a gamut of emotions took place here.

I'll be honest, like Rileydog's post says, Brown is the BEST choice for our team, no one else comes close.

Silas - too much like Rudy in wanting the players to like him
Dunleavy - lost control with Portland
Van Gumby - boring style of basketball, quit on the Knicks - fortunately doesn't look like he will be available
Carlisle - sorta like Van Gumby with the boring style of ball, may not be able to get through to Francis and company

Now if push comes to shove, I guess I would take, begrudingly, Carlisle over all these other guys simply because he won 50 games with a roster that had no go to guys, but it was in the East afterall, though.

I would seriously consider Nellie, if I was Les and CD, if Brown does indeed goes to Detroit (which makes no sense to me considering that he thought his Philly team was better than them).

But the ante on Larry has gone up significantly and it is time to get him to Houston at all costs.

keeping fingers crossed and holding out hope for Larry Brown

One problem with your analysis of the current situation. I don't think people have been overreacting regardless of whether the story has changed througout the day or not. If Detroit is going to fire the coach that has done the best coaching job in the NBA the past two seasons, you can only assume it's because they feel pretty damn confident that their guy, Brown in this case, is on the way in. Oh, and faith is something weak people have made up to give them strength.

Manny, what would you say at the idea of giving Dunleavy another chance with a team that doesn't have the riffraff that Portland does.

Also, would you take Pat Riley?

I'm glad we didn't hire larry brown. He hasn't even won a championship with any of his teams. He wears down his players. I think Paul Silas and Van gundy are better coaches than brown

Bottom line is its smarter for him to take the Detroit job. The last thing he wants to get into is another situation where he is forced to keep a player that he would much rather part with suchas the Iverson situation.

As much as Les, CD, and Rudy for that matter have built Steve up to be the "Franchise" there is little doubt they intend to live or die with Stevie, and I do not think even with Yao here that LB wants to be stuck in a situation like that. Add to that Francis is no where near the dominant player in ANY area of guard play except in REBs which we could make the argument that if he is rebounding that much he is out of position to run the break or push the ball up.

What does Francis truly bring to the table? How interested do you think a coach is in trying to coach a guy with his obvious athleticism, but tremendous lack of basketball knowledge?

Obviously not much b/c the top 2 candidates do not seem to have much interest, and the 2nd-3rd tier guys are not that much of an improvement over what we just got rid of.

If Dunleavy or Silas are the coach of this team next year, I would consider the firing of Rudy T a failure. If the Rox ultimately have to go a rung lower for their coach, then I think Les needs to do this city a favor and sell the team.

He has won 2 championships, but the first was handed to him, since then he and his staff have been nothing short of a joke of an organization.

The only way the rockets screw up is if they hire Mike Dunleavy.

Oh yeah, good luck to "hall of fame" coach Larry Brown. We don't need a loser like that. Get real people.
