That would make sense except ESPN already reported that McHale is very much liked by Alexander making it unlikely he would be fired.

This isn't coming completely out of nowhere...

You think McHale is a great players coach? Okay keep him but make him get his own version of a Tex Winter to handle X's and O'x.

Ive been a huge fan of Morey up until this.

I know isn't support your man talk and all. But the incompetence of these playoffs, and how dependent we were on talent to carry us is so obvious. Why does he choose to put his head in the sand?

We will win 50+ again. No doubt about it. But so what.

I wonder why the Rockets haven't officially announced they've picked up mchales option for next year. What are they waiting for?

They're probably waiting for some of the dark anger to fade from our souls before they make an announcement that might kill a percentage of season ticket renewals.

They need to come up with something positive (no, I have no idea what it would be this early into the offseason) before they unload the "we're sticking with mediocrity to get us to the Promised Land" news.

I disagree. I found a lot of interesting things.

    1. We might not hold out for 2015 free agency. I was expecting a pretty dull offseason without cap space and unable to move Lin and Asik (based on Morey's earlier comments). I thought we'd shuffle the deck chairs a bit but not impinge 2015 cap space, but now I'm not so sure. He says they pursue aggressive scenarios but also allows that something smaller could be done. And he says a 3rd all-star isn't necessary. And he says they have financial flexibility this year, and not limited to minimum deals. He's contemplating using the MLE, which would knock us out of 2015.

    2. He expects to keep Lin and Asik. That's not new new. That was the line from back in December. But, it sounds like he could dump them in a big deal, but doesn't expect to. It also sounds like he isn't intending to do a salary dump and then backfill with the MLE to preserve 2015 cap-space. We'll likely have both those guys plus a new MLE player.

    3. Parsons contract isn't figured out yet. I suspect that's going to hinge on what happens on draft night. If the Rockets make no big trade, I suspect we pick up his option for a cheap contract to maintain flexibility. If we do a big trade, we re-sign as an RFA. If he's traded, his new team can do whichever one. But, if I'm right that we'll spend the MLE, exercising the option doesn't make as much sense.

    4. McHale is a good coach. It's not a revelation to me, but to the 80% of the board who thinks he should be fired, he obviously still has the confidence of management.

    5. McHale is picking his own staff. This is interesting after the row with Adelman over Morey wanting to meddle in his staff. Why would it now be up to McHale after making such a big stink about it with the last coach? Does he just trust McHale's judgemet over Adelman's? What about all that business about the player development life-cycle, coordination with RGV, etc? I'm scratching my head on this one.

Mchale is very likeable with just about everybody. But Daryl Morey's ultimately the the GM of the team. He sees how horrible of a coach he is first hand. Mchale was retained because:

    A. Morey rejects the reality that Moreyball is a gimmick and wants to continue his experiment with a coach who'll allow him the power to implement it. Yeah Mchale sucks, but he's the only coach dumb enough to let the GM call the shots

    Or

    B. He's scared of the backlash he'll get if he fires Mchale, and Mchale ends up trashing him around the league. Morey's reputation is already not well received around the league among agents and other GM's. What could be worse than a well liked disgruntled employee dragging your already tarnished name through the mud.

Either way, we're effed up. The GM should not be coaching the team and Moreyball is not championship basketball. I see Dwight eventually getting frustrated with Mchale (or Morey) for not being able to contend, or Harden eventually becoming a diva because nobody's holding him accountable. Until we get a REAL system with a REAL coach, we're playing with fools gold
