Atlanta paper: Rockets need Jim Jackson (who is up for trade)

This isn't anything too significant, but just an interesting little blurb I thought I might pass along to see what some of you fantasy GM's come up with.
    http://www.accessatlanta.com/partners/ajc/epaper/editions/today/sports_a38434ea245bc0fa1071.html

General manager Pete Babcock does not want to lose players without something in return, particularly those who have guaranteed contracts. So, while trying to strengthen the team, he has had added incentive to get something done.

"There are deals out there, but not every one is a good one. We've been in constant discussion with a number of teams," he said.

Jackson is a particularly attractive player for some of the league's better teams. On the final year of his $2.3 million contract, the 30-year-old is a proven scorer. Teams like the Lakers, Heat, Spurs, Rockets and Suns need Jackson's skills.

Besides, with the emergence of Terry and the promising play of McLeod, the Hawks are moving away from the one-on-one isolation plays Jackson enjoys.

Beside the obvious speculation that will come, notice how the Rockets are spoken of in that paragraph as one of "the league's better teams"? Gotta like that too.

I sure wouldn't mind Jim Jackson, but at what price?

IF (and this is a huge if) Shandon desired to leave, I'd sense one of his top choices would be to go home to Atlanta. Shandon (2.25 mill) for Jim Jackson (2.33 mill) would work straight up. I am NOT for trading Shandon. If Shandon WANTS to be traded, and he WANTS to go home to Atlanta, trading FOR Jim Jackson, a pretty good player, would probably be our best route, assuming Atlanta would take Shandon straight up. Jackson has a relatively cheap salary for a 16-5 player.

The thought that comes to my mind though, would be a 3 way type of deal. This would be a piece of the Mutumbo deal, where Atlanta would prefer Cato to (name of center they are being offered) and in turn, trade that center and Jackson to us, if we also send out someone else to either them or another team.

    Shandon is underrated.

I really do like JJ, but Shandon needs to stay and Mobley has too much potential. Shandon is needed to play D, without him we become the Nuggets of the 80's.
JJ is a nice player but unless he can play SF we don't need another SG.

I have him on my fantasy team and well... Jackson has been having knee problems as of late. He recovered from a knee injury earlier in the season only to hyperextend it later.

Also consider this -- When the Mavs had Mashburn, Kidd, and Jackson on the same team, they couldn't get along. Jason would be happy shooting 1 shot a game, but I'm wondering how much Jackson and Mashburn wanted to jack the ball up. He's been bouncing around the league for a while now, too, so something is obviously up with the guy. Either that or he's one of those players at the wrong place at the wrong time a lot of times. I just don't want the whole Steve, Cuttino, Jackson thing to be a mirror of what happened in Dallas.

I thought the JJJ feud was because they all wanted to go out with Toni Braxton [IMG]

    ------------------
Francis out top, 9 seconds on the clock, he gives a no look pass to Cuttino Mobley, 4 seconds left, Mobley passes to an open Langhi in the corner with 1 second left! Langhi at the buzzer.......YES!!! How Sweet It Is!!

Exactly, RocketsPimp. I suppose Jackson as the backup 2/3 would be OK, but we've already got Rudy trying to turn Cat into Kobe. Except Kobe, good decision or bad decision, generally keeps moving with the ball. I like Cat, but, too much dribble, dribble, dribble (19, 20, 21...) dribble, dribble, dribble (22,23...) "Oh, sh**!" (Shot! Miss! Defensive board! Transition dunk!)
I'd look, but I'm afraid Jackson's assists numbers will be even lower than Cat's. As if that were possible.
Only if Shandon wants to go home, or if we get Jackson in a 3-way package deal.

Jim Jackson doesnt make a whole lot of sense for the Rockets. I seriously dont think Jackson and Mobley could co-exist at all in this offense. JJ is a very talented one on one guard with the ability to post up in an isolation situation but that is not what the Rockets need at this point. They need a role player, kind of like what Shandon is to fit into the scheme of things by being able to play off the ball and be a solid defender. Jackson is the type of player that is effective when he can initiate offense with his ability to post up defenders but is not nearly as effective playing off the ball. The situation in Dallas didnt work b/c Mashburn and Jackson could not co-exist for similar reasons and neither was an adequate defender.

Yeah, I heard that, too... but then I also heard she's a lesbian. So I'd rather stick the basketball hypotheses... I'm on safer ground that way. [IMG]

Braxton's husband-to-be might find that lesbian rumor "surprising."

no way we need another iso player who will demand the ball. what we need is a serious big man to play d and rebound...oh, wait, that's kato. ok, what we really, really need is a good s.f. that will not commit stupid fouls at inopportune times and can actually score, and yet, play second banana to wink, cat, and mo. hmmmmm, who could that be?

We do not need a shooting guard. With Anderson and Mobley we are very solid at the shooting guard position. Both Mobley and Anderson have skills, great scoring abilities and the potential to be an all-star. Anderson and Mobley can form a nice combo at the shooting guard position for the next nine years or more. Anderson is great defender, can rebound, he hustles, a great outside shooter and works well with screen and rolls. Mobley is best with isolations. He can also hit the outside jump shot and he has an unstoppable crossover.
Jim Jackson is an athletic player but I would rather have Mobley and Anderson. Both Mobley and Anderson are younger than Jackson. I would definetly like Jackson to become a Rocket, but I would not want to trade any of our players. Jackson would not be satisfied with starting the game on the bench. Jackson would be a good idea to get if Mobley injures his elbow again. He and Anderson would provide the Rockets with great offense and athleticism. But with Norris, Francis, Mobley, Anderson, Williams, Bullard and Langhi it would be difficut to give Jackson the playing time he would demand.

    LOL Dada

I dont see us needing him or us being one of the league's better teams. All the teams they mentioned except the suns have solid shooting guards(Elie is good, but a little old)

The Lakers have the best two in the league, the heat have one of the top 5 best two's, the spurs have anderson who is playing great next to duncan/robinson, and the rockets have possibly the best two guard duo in the league.

JJ's not a small forward, and shouldn't be asked to fill that role. He doesn't provide any defense, or good shooting. He shoots 36% from the field! He's just a perimeter scorer, and a injury-prone one at that. Jackson to LA would be funny for the sole reason that it would unite the feared tandem of Jackson and Rider at the 2 guard. They worked out so well in Atlanta, too.

Why can't the guy play SF? Isn't he like 6'6" or something??? I know the guy is a natural "2" and 6'6" is a little short for a small forward, he couldn't pull it off?

My main concern with Jackson is his injuries.

There's a whole series of daytime talkshows revolving around that very subject...

If we can get Jackson I say take him because he is playing the 3 in Atlanta because they moved Terry to the 2 and Baloney I mean Maloney is pushing point. He can help us alot more than Walt. That dude is horrible.
