Don't compare Perkins to Amare physically, there is no comparison. Don't compare Perkins to Curry either, Curry was much, much better. Perkins is a project, not as bad as Diop, but he could definitely use a year in college to deserve a 1st round pick.

If we draft him in the second
then he decides to goto college
do we hold his rights? or is the pick just wasted?

It would be cool to be able to hold his rights like Spurs did with Ginobil....but I don't think that's possible.

MemphisX, you are right, from a team's perspective. If he's gonna be a lottery pick in the future, why not take him now? But they usually say "he should go to college..." for the benefit of the player. They should really say, "If you go to college, work hard, develop, and live up to your potential, you could be a lottery pick." Whether or not that happens depends largely on the individual player. With some polish, it looks like Perkins has the raw potential to become a top pick. The difference between being an early or late 1st rounder, depending on how high he could go, could be around $2 mil a year in salary ($3 mil for top picks, $1 mil as you say for late rounders). That's $8 mil over the course of a rookie contract, which is not exactly chump change.

If I was Perkins and I believed that I had the talent to be a lottery or even a top 5 pick (he might not believe, who knows), there's no way I'd settle for being a late 1st rounder. I'd go to college, work on my game, showcase my skills on a national level, build up some hype, then pull a Marbury or Carmelo and come out after one year. People knew a little about Carmelo coming out of high school, but compared to way he is now, it's no comparison. Seeing how Perkins is already considered a possible 1st rounder out of high school, which very few high school kids are, I hope he's smart enough to realize that one solid year in college could push him to the top of the draft, which will give him a much higher rookie contract and the props that come with being a lottery pick.

He's just gotta have faith in himself that he can get there.
