I'm confused. He's married, and he also has a girlfriend?

    What I was thinking too...

Silver: "This Sterling situation isn't helping. Before every game it is being discussed.... Warriors in 7... Then we force Sterling to give full control to his ex wife."

Im not marginalizing. But to answer your question I would publicly address the situation by undermining his belief. Stating that its an unfortunate that he has to live within himself with the idea that people of color are seperate from him, and that being united as a people and not by a color is better for all humanity.

Exactly, money talks and I would imagine some of the average players talking bad about the players for the Clippers would do the same thing if they were in that situation making millions.

I definitely agree with the they are playing both sides of the field thing here and have to act like they care just to avoid more backlash.

If there is evidence that he discriminated against minorities within his organization then there would be something to go after. It's not like he put a stain on the reputation of his organization by going into the internet and putting a blog saying stupid racist ****. Is it legal to discriminate against people based on political, cultural or religious differences? Is the NBA an exception?

This is between his wife and himself. His wife choose to record a conversation without his consent to gain a political or judicial advantage on him. She is black/latina and yet married a racist guy. What does that say about her?

Now his opinion is public knowledge however, players, coaches and others can make a decision on whether to associate with the fool any further. That is their free will and hopefully they will make wise decisions for themselves and their families.

What makes this whole thing a blurry issue to me is the contracts that owners and the NBA have. He entered into those voluntarily and so may be subject to pretty significant sanctions... but again... would such sanctions be really legal? I'm not sure.

In the end my hope would be that people give more importance to the power of voluntary association rather than actively advocating for the use of force (sanctions, firing, expulsion, etc) from the NBA.

Our government does far far worse things every minute of every f******g day and barely anyone objects or lifts a finger but let someone in the sacred oh so important arena of sports say something unpopular and boom! the response is overwhelming. It's a joke and it's on US.

Sure, why not? The NBA has fined Mark Cuban over a million dollars for random comments it didn't like.

Exactly, but my conclusion is the opposite of yours. The U.S. government does "far far worse things" on things that matter, but on things that do not and are high profile, it does a first rate propaganda. And that is Sterling is done. He may be a made man, but in the overall scheme of things he's still nothing.

The only question is how to get rid of him without violating issues of property rights.

Fixed that with one important adjective.

I hate Sterling, but I still think something important is being overlooked in this whole story. I feel like if this had happened 15 years ago, the racial outrage would be just about equivalent, but there would also be a lot of talk concerning public versus private statements. In 2014, it's like we've pretty much accepted, via the internet and the NSA/USA, that privacy is just dead, extinct. Everyone shrugs at the question of how this conversation was obtained and became public, because it's like we almost don't believe anyone has any type of real privacy anymore -- especially true if they're a public figure.

It still gives me pause, even though I hate what he said.

I think this will get resolved after the season -- I really do. If all employees threaten to boycott their jobs for the next season, and if the other owners apply enough constant pressure, he will sell his share of the team. He is, after all, a lazy piece of crap, so why would he want all the continuous hassle?

The people that will force him to sell his team aren't fans, employees, NBA players, or other owners. Donald Sterling doesn't give a sheet (if this were not obvious).

It will be the political rulers of the United States who make him sell his team (or appear to). The value of the propaganda is too great for them to miss out.

Except that is not the situation at play here, at all. Read up on the controversy before you chime in!

By that logic he should be a huge Jim Crane fan which he isn't. People should be kissing his but if Bridgewater is drafted in the second round.

I'm not sure the private vs public comes into play here, though. The NBA penalizes owners and players for damage it does to their business or reputation - I'm not sure whether the person intended to do so is all that relevant. The damage is done and it's the result of Donald Sterling's voluntary actions.

So it would be OK for the KKK to own a NBA franchise as long as it kept its beliefs in private?

Exactly, when you run a multi-cultural global organization, you are held to certain standards.
