Sterling was famous for going out of his way to contributing to charitable causes that made him appear symathetic to minority causes- this was the reason he was to be given the NAACP award.

but it has always been so self aggrandizing-
during the 2009 racist slumlord lawsuit, he took out full page ads to remind the community how involved he was.

he is famous for ads like this one(with errors in ads intact)

take a look at his executive board and the causes he chose to support:

He's not facing jail time. He isn't going to be stripped of his ownership without compensation. Ultimately his 'punishment' for a private conversation leaking will be a great deal of embarrassment and discomfort for a man who seems to care very much what people think of him.

He is a member of a private association that requires the approval of the other members. I'm sure the NBA bylaws have procedures in place for its members to remove another member that is a threat to their collective brand. If the other members of the NBA ownership desire to discipline him or remove him altogether from their association for fears of his continued presence damaging their brand then that is their right.

His continued association with the Clippers brand will negatively impact its revenue going forward. Ticket sales, in-game concessions, tv contract revenue, advertising revenue, ability to attract top level talent, etc. are all going to be negatively affected by his presence. The 30 owners of the NBA have empowered their commissioner to protect the best interests of the league as a whole and a key aspect of that responsibility is protecting franchise values. I don't see any lawful discipline (following procedures already in place by league bylaws) toward Sterling by the NBA commissioner as being unfair. Especially if that discipline requires him to sell his franchise at what will surely be a ridiculous profit. Again, the ultimate net result of his private conversation leaking will be a great deal of embarrassment and discomfort for someone who seems to care very much what others think of him. I think that is a fair deal.

Furthermore if he has minority owners (I'm talking shares, not race) I'm sure they feel very worried that the value of their investment may take a tremendous hit as long as Sterling is associated with the franchise. They could (and should) pursue action against him as well.

How the audio was obtained doesn't really matter to me as this situation is not unfolding in the court of law, rather the court of public opinion. Free speech allows him to feel however and wants to and to say whatever he wants without government punishment. Consumers of his product and co-members of his organization also have the right to voice their displeasure with his comments and feelings via their dollars and collective disciplinary action as outlined in the NBA bylaws. If it truly is Sterling on those tapes, and there hasn't been any statement from the Clippers or Sterling that he did not say those words, I can't see any scenario where he remains as owner beyond the playoffs.

A lot of these young people don't understand the racial turmoil that happened in the 60s in this country, this is surreal, in a disgusting way. America should be very angry and demand Sterling be removed from ownership and sued for all he's worth. Jordan and JayZ come to mind as prominent black men with enough money and power to find some laywers for a class action suit. But I doubt only black and hispanic people are pissed about this. I like to think a lot of powerful white people will fight Sterling too. They ****ing better.

Think it would have been more impactful if they turned their jerseys inside out.

I mean the stitching is a little itchy sometimes against the skin...and the NBA might fine them (although I doubt they would in this particular case)

So, you're suggesting that racism should save him millions of dollars? Nice.

did you come up with that on your own, or is this twitter user from Los Angeles taking your quotes from Clutchfans?

The away jersey says Los Angeles so maybe that's what they'll wear at home too.

Funny if they play on the Lakers court.

Dude should own Timberwolves. I heard they have a all-white lineup.
