dunleavy would be my first choice... he has experience coaching a big man and was responsible for turning rasheed wallace from the punch-and-duck fruitcake in washington to a monster in portland...(hopefully he could do some of that to griffin) he has also coached sabonis and helped usher vlade into the league...he runs a nice inside-out offense that would better make use of yao's obvious passing ability and as stated before hes not quite the players coach that rudy was so he will bring some discipline..... above all else he will probably stick with the job...san antonio and sacramento both hired coaches who were not the "hottest" name on the block, but year in year out they are successful and without the distraction of whether or not the coach will bolt.
I like Dunleavy as a first choice if for nothing more than the fact that he's proven himself as an excellent coach wilth the ability to stick with his team. LB moves around too much, and although he may be touted as a basketball guru, I don't think he'll be here for more than 3-4 years if he were the Rox head coach. Whereas Dunleavy is much younger and has more patience to be with a team for a longer period. Face it, the Rox may be a playoff team for the next three years, but how can they expect to compete with San Antonio, and Dallas which are still on the up for that same period of time? And that's just the Midwest Division! We need a long term committed coach, so if LB & family want to move to Denver or LA, then let him go there.
Just watched Sportcenter on ESPN and they mentioned that Houston was the top job open now and that Brown was interviewed yesterday, as we all know. What bothered me is Brown made a comment about LA being a "genuine interest". I think we may not be Brown's first choice. I think Brown is a great coach and all and would love to see him coaching the Rox but will he really have his heart into it? That is why I think Dunleavy should now be our first choice with JVG a close second. Doc Rivers would cost us a draft pick and even though he has done a good job in Orlando, I don't think he is worth it. What about it guys?
If Dunleavy couldn't get it done in portland with the players he had he won't be able to get it done here. Larry brown had the owner of the 76ers contact the owner of the clippers for him. He has shown a lot of interest in the LA job and that seems to be his first choice. Jeff van Gundy wants to be paid 7 mil a year. Are you kidding me I don't care how good he is I dont know of a coach that is worth that kind of money. That leaves me with one last choice Paul Silas. He may not be my #1 choice but he is very capable of getting the job done. Though he will probably not get the job I think because of the reasons above that he could be heavily considered for the head coach of our frustrating rockets.
Face it, none of these coaches mentioned have ever won a championship, so the argument against Dunleavy applies to all. They are top prospects because they are all good enough to win it though given the right team. As for the arguments mentioned against Brown and JVG, that is why we should go with Dunleavy.
I've come to the conclusion that I don't really give a damn who ends up being the coach as long as he is able to help our team win us another championship. It could be an assistant from the worst high school team ever, but as long as we win, who cares.
I would be shocked if Donald Sterling forks out that the type of $$ that is required to get Larry Brown. I heard between 6-8 million a year!!!!
Okay well.....I'm starting to like Dunleavy. Can someone show me his STATISTICS? And his records and stuff?
You mean the Trailgangstas? I like Dunleavy. And I would bet a free agent like a Gary Payton, et al, would rather come here to play for Dunleavy than a Larry Brown (who is wound fairly tight). But don't get me wrong, Larry Brown would be nice, too. Frankly, the Rockets are fortunate to have four good coaches out there to go after (Dunleavy, Brown, Van Gundy, Silas).
Larry Brown - Career - 894 Wins - 717 Losses - .555% Mike Dunleavy - Career - 398Wins - 390 Losses - .505% Jeff Van Gundy - Career - 248 Wins - 172 Losses - .590%
I agree with you completely. Add to that the fact that Dunleavy has been out of coaching for two years, he's ready to give 150%, whereas Larry Brown always sounds tired and worn out. Dunleavy would be at the top of my list.
The JEFF VAN GUNDY people have convinced me that JVG would be good. Now you MD people.......convince me! Why the heck is Mike Dunleavy a good candidate? Because he's a homer?
MD is too much of a players coach. We need a teacher and a leader--a guy able to get players to play better team ball than before this coach arrived--right now I have Brown and JVG as the clear top 2--probably Brown 1st, Silas 3 and MD 4 or lower. Of these MD had the most talent to work with and with the exception of Silas (who I have similar concerns) is the only one not to get his team to exceed expectations and even make the finals. Having Rocket ties and being a nice, players coach type (versus teacher, or firey disciplinarian or both), are the least of my concerns. Going for someone "in house" or because of former organizational loyalty more often lead to poor choices. Someone needs to get Francis, Mobley and others to change--we are not talking about simply maintaining or continuing the path they are currently on.
Hey, over on ESPN.com Dr Jack is doing his weekly chat. Someone just asked him "as well respected as larry brown is , do you think he could actually bring a championship back to the houston rockets? he has never one a championship what makes this situation of coaching the rockets any better?" let's see what ole Dr. Jack has to say
Dunleavy 'lost' his Laker team, his Bucks team, and his Blazers team. He is good and competent -- and holds little sway over his players. I believe his interview here was a courtesy to increase his attractiveness to Atlanta fans (both of them).
Dr. Jack Ramsay:"Houston: as well respected as larry brown is , do you think he could actually bring a championship back to the houston rockets? he has never one a championship what makes this situation of coaching the rockets any better? Dr. Jack Ramsay: (4:13 PM ET ) No one is sure where the available coaches will end up. If Brown goes to Houston, you can be sure that the Rockets will play a better team game, the Mao will improve, and the team defense will be better. The same conditions will prevail if Van Gundy takes that job. " WTF. THE MAO?!?!? how ignorant is that...just kidding. he said Larry Brown or Jeff Van Gundy. I agree. Both would be good for the Rockets. Either one...........JVG..........i'm likin JVG just because he is younger...but Larry is more experienced and knows how to get his players to play with EMOTION AND HUSTLE!
Larry would b good but Mike would b great! Lately I have been hearing that Larry Brown is really interested in LA or Denver. I know that Les and Cd met with him but, I have a feeling that he will take the job in LA simply because of his family wanting to live in LA. I think he would be thrilled to coach this Rockets team but he knows that this is his last stint as a coach and he was in Philly for 6 yrs and his family really didnt like it there so this time I feel that he will let his family decide this one or they will play a big part in the decisoin. Please dont get me wrong Larry would be a GREAT fit here but would his heart really be in it? thats the question you have to ask would he be content living in Houston I know his family would'nt like it that much just like it was in Philly they would not be happy and he could leave in 2yrs and we would be in the same position we are in now. On the other hand Mike Dunleavy would be perfect here in Houston, he already lives in Texas and he has personal feelings towards Houston and the Rockets organitzation(former rocket) he would be openminded and he would be able to work with Les/CD/Rudy, Mike would be the perfect guy. He is sort of young he is a winner he demands the best out of his players and he is a players coach(like Rudy) so the transition wouldnt be that bad. The most important thing about this is Mike D. WANTS TO BE HERE he has said that he hope he gets the job. I know we can't go wrong w/ the coaches thats been named but Jeff Van Gundy is not the answer. Larry Brown's heart isnt here in Houston (family in LA) Mike Dunleavy is the only guy who has shown me that he really wants it bad!! B] COME ON LES MAKE THE SAFE DECISION AND THE RIGHT ONE IS MIKE DUNLEAVY!!!!!
Another positive prospect about hiring MD is that we might be able to lure Jr. here when his contract is up for real cheap. By that time Jr. should have developed into a nice player.
