It seems that an iso has three purposes:

Beat your man to the hole and shoot or get fouled,

Beat your man and dish when they rotate

and last, get a double team and pass.

Do isolations have anything to do with playing with the ball and then jacking up a long range shot with nobody underneath for a rebound?

I think Cuttino "The Black Hole" Mobley needs someone to knock some sense into him.

Abso-freaking-lutely. Let me explain it by your first point "beat your man". OK, if you beat your man like Larry Hughes or can shoot over them like Dickerson, but you can't do both like Mobley, the d will adjust to your weakness, and you will be shooting really poor FG% like Hughes and Dickerson.

Here is the deal...if you burn the D off the dribble, and they adjust by backing up from you, you better shoot over them, or they have basically stopped you (like Hughes). I'm not saying everytime Mobley shoots over his man is correct. But, you MUST do it to keep the defense honest. If you can't hit it, the coach is going to stop calling your number.

    Partner,

Perhaps you were a little too eager to answer without reading my whole question.

Do isolations have anything to do with playing with the ball and then jacking up a long range shot with nobody underneath for a rebound?

Is it wise for anyone to take a shot when no one is even near the bucket to get a board? I agree you have to shoot, but considering we will miss atleast half the shots we take, we should make sure someone is in rebounding position before jacking up shots.

Well, that is not really a question, because if there is someone underneath, it is NOT an ISO, since the goaltender has the dribble penetration stopped. Unless his name is LaFrentz. Boy, Mobley got around LaFrentz 3 different ways. Beautiful.

There are ways to have shooters score without ISOs, for sure. I'm just answering your question. In guard ISO (and many low post ISOs) there is no rebounder because you need an open lane to give the scorer the layup dimension.

So yes, shooting without a rebounder is part of the 2 Shakes. And it is also part of our 24 High pnr. The only rebounders when Collier shoots off the baseline roll are slashing in. They aren't planted.
