I don't particularly like compass about now. Washington Mutual is .. ok But I want to know which one is probably the best for a personal account and which are best for a business account Rocket River
I really love my Credit Union. No or very low fees for most services, personable, friendly people, and easy loan processing. It's a wonderful place to bank, and I wouldn't go anywhere else. I know that doesn't help you out though. Sorry.
I have all of my personal accounts at Bank of America, because I get free checking and I don't have to look very far for an ATM.
I started with First Interstate back in the late 80's till they were bought out by Wells Fargo. I've been with them ever since. I like the fact that they have ATM's in Tom Thumb and Randall's stores. For my auto-debit monthly savings account, I use ING Direct. The auto-debit savings rocks. I don't have to worry about anything - I automatically save and have been getting 2-2.3% on my savings lately, which ain't much, but it's better than most other savings accounts.
If you can bank at a Credit Union (assuming were just talking personal finance here) that would be the way to go. I have a Visa card with a 9.9% rate that I don't have to use (some banks punish you if you don't regularly use their card or maintain a balence on it). Plus I can get either free or interest bearing checking if I wanted to. I also got my car loan through the credit union. It was very easy and the rate was pretty good for the time. Now, my wife works for a bank so we have most of our accounts with her bank as we get an employees discount. But it that weren't the case, I'd go with the Credit Union.
I switched banks to Wamu last week and I have regreted it ever since: The account rep gave me incorrect information about interest payoffs. Spelled both me and my wife's name wrong on our accounts and our check cards (despite it being their mistake, they say they can't send us new ones for 30 days because of security policies). Incorrectly informed us that we would have to call customer service to sign up for online banking (called CS and they told us that they had to do inside the branch; had to make a 2nd trip to get this done). Holding our 1st deposit into our money market for 30 days (again, this is their policty, despite the fact that our deposit was in cash). I should have stayed with my credit union. Credit unions rock (although their interest rates suck).
The consumer guy on KTRH has been fielding lots of negative calls regarding Washington Mutual, especially dealing with the fact that they often hold payments sent in on loans for more than thirty days. That would piss me off!
The Troubleshooter, Tom Martino. I love his show and yes, he has been all over Wamu about how they handle mortgages (on the way to open my new accounts, I was listening to his comments on the radio, but felt since all of the complaints were about mortgages, I had little to worry about (little did I know)).
See, the thing is. I don't have any money. So what good is a bank when you don't have any money? I bank at WaMu. The people are friendly... because they know me.
