Brown to quit 76ers, fits Cavaliers' needs

    05/26/03

    Plain Dealer Reporter

Philadelphia 76ers coach Larry Brown will resign today, according to a league source.

That could mean Brown will become a coaching candidate for the Cavaliers. Brown has the background Cavs General Manager Jim Paxson and owner Gordon Gund seek. Paxson said he was looking for a coach with postseason and regular-season success, one with the ability to teach young players.

Brown guided the Sixers to their first NBA Finals in 18 years when they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001.

Brown is 879-685 during the regular season and 69-72 in the postseason in 20 NBA seasons.

Brown has coached the Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio Spurs, New Jersey Nets and Indiana Pacers in addition to the 76ers in the NBA. He began his coaching career with Carolina and Denver in the old American Basketball Association before taking UCLA to the national title game in 1980. He won the national title with Kansas in 1988.

For weeks, New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy, former New Orleans Hornets coach Paul Silas and current University of Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins have been most often mentioned for the Cavs' job.

Brown's resignation also means, according to a league source, that Van Gundy and Portland coach Mo Cheeks will become candidates to coach the Sixers. Van Gundy also is the top candidate of Rockets owner Les Alexander, according to a league source.

The Cavs want to name a coach before the June 26 NBA Draft.

    Damn.

I don't think Brown wants to go to Cleveland. Does he have any relation with the city of Cleveland or the state of Ohio or Lebron James or Ricky Davis???? Or anyone else?

COME ON. I KNOW HE WANTS TO COME TO HOUSTON. :(

Anyways.....Jeff....you are right. Rockets better not waste any time.....Cavs want a coach before the draft. Well......it's the coaching candidates' decisions.

I don't want Larry Brown. The guy is moody and has a tendency to want to leave after a few years. After a few years in Philadelphia there was a "Larry Brown is retiring or leaving" thing every year. The Rockets need some stability, I hope that means Jeff Van Gundy is seriously interested in the Rockets.

i doubt Larry Brown wants to go to cleveland. Every year after losing he gets depressed and talks about retirement, just imagine if he coach the cavs, this would become a weekly event.

If Larry Brown resigns then i have a feeling Les will pounce on him and he will be our new coach. If not, JVG or Dunleavy.

I see him choosing the Rockets over the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers are a mess even with Lebron. They are 4-5 yrs away from even a winning record. They don't have much of a nucleus of good players who can play cohesive basketball.

they do have individual talent in Wagner and James but I see that becoming a fiasco in the future. ....not enough basketball to go around.

I don't think Brown wants to take over a rebuilding project. The Houston job is probably much more attractive to him.

LB wants either the Cavs or Rockets job. Count on it.

It's a no lose situation for him.

    LeBron James or YM.

If JVG gets one, he still gets the other.

    Either way he wins.

i would love to see Mario Elie as an assistant coach. There is just something about him. He was a great defender with a great attitude who could command respect of the players

Yes indeed! It will be very extremely interesante!!!!!!!!!!

So many coaching vacancies and the summer will be interesting.

    AND THIS IS ONLY COACHING.

    There is still the DRAFT.

    And the Summer League.

    And the offseason moves!

Yeah. He's still with the Blazers. But he might quit and return to Philly....

    He might get fired.

I don't think the Blazers even have a GM right now.

getting a new coach does bring excitement to a team. I watched the rockets for years but this the first time in a long time i've been looking forward to the next season. I want to see the new arena, the new coach, the new uniforms, maybe new players???, a new system, a rested Yao Ming. Can't wait!

If i was Mo Cheeks i would get the hell out of Portland. There roster is going to be going through a major shakeup. Go to philadelphia, where you have a chance of making the finals
