If, as ESPN reported, JVG is to be announced this afternoon as Cavs coach -- does that mean if he is not, then he is likely Rox coach?

If, as reports have stated, Brown is to be determined to stay or go from Philly by tomorrow afternoon -- does that mean if he leaves 6ers he is heading here?

Ah, the intrigue of 'reports'. Reports with times to come true on them, in particular.

Van Gundy hasn't been offered deal yet

(Bob Finnan, Morning Journal Writer May 26, 2003)

CLEVELAND -- A league source said Cavaliers owner Gordon Gund spoke with former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy yesterday, but no offer was made to become their next head coach.

ESPN Radio was reporting yesterday that the Cavaliers would announce Van Gundy as their new coach today, but that's premature. Van Gundy remains the Cavaliers' No. 1 choice, with ex-Hornets coach Paul Silas a close second.

''We're still in the process,'' Cavaliers vice president of communications Tad Carper said. ''We're sticking to what Pax said.''

Cavaliers general manager Jim Paxson said yesterday during a morning press briefing that the process is ongoing.

''Even before this No. 1 pick, we had two quality candidates with experience that we had a chance to talk to over the past couple weeks,'' Paxson said. ''We feel good about that. I don't think just getting the No. 1 pick is the main reason we'll still be talking to those candidates.''

Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich stepped down as Houston's coach Saturday. Many around the league think Van Gundy has had his eye on the Rockets' job for quite some time.

Van Gundy has said to acquaintances that even though he thinks the Cleveland job is extremely attractive, Houston might be the job he really wants.
