I don't like Grossman going down to OKC. Don't care how the first 14 games have gone. Cant sell me on Krauss or Marwin over Grossman.Glad Harrell is off the team.
What awesome news to wake up to!! Will be great to finally get to watch Springer and see what we have Hopefully Singleton will continue to hit and follow him here soon I would imagine we see Grossman back relatively quickly, prob want to let him go down and get his swing going
Last night the Astros trotted out a starting lineup with 7 of the 9 players hitting below Mario Mendoza's line. That is just inexcusable. This call up was long overdue, regardless of any arbitration eligibility timeline. A team's #1 objective is to win, period. If we're worried about planning for 2020 for the next 5 years, then there won't be any fans left supporting the team when 2020 arrives. Here's how I manage my employees at work. I train them and prepare them well enough such that they can leave. But I treat them well enough such that they want to stay. Crane needs to hear this lesson.
14 games. Dominguez, Castro, Villar and Carter are not hitting their weight. Should the Astros fire them? Should the Astros fire their hitting coach? Most starters have between 40 to 50 ABs. That is still a small sample size. Astros County has this article Diagnosing the Astros Offense
Yep, the Astros offense is gonna come back to the mean, which will probably still be very bad, but not this bad. The team is hitting .185, last year with basically the same roster we hit .240. This team at some point is gonna spike and overperform for a little while. Krauss and Presley have combined for about a .400 OPS. Not to say these guys are good, but no MLB player, or even AAA player is gonna maintain numbers that bad. Carter while there is debate about how good, he certainly isn't a .136 hitter.
I have only followed BABIP for a short while and agree some of it is luck, but can't you say that some of it is also just weak hitting and not being able to drive the ball very well? It seems guys that have a high BABIP are fast enough to run out grounders on occasion and/or are adept at driving the ball well enough to find holes in the defense. Mix in a little good luck and you have a high BABIP. I refuse to believe it is all bad luck. Of course, the Astros hitters can't be THIS bad though, can they? Hopefully Springer will hit the ground running a la Hunter Pence when he first appeared in the majors.
It isn't all bad or good luck regarding BABIP. Springer should have a high BABIP in the majors, but not as well as he did in the minors. BABIP means more to pitchers as they get a wider samples size of hitters.
BABIP's for some notable bad hitters Carlos Corporan .277 Brad Ausmus .288 Adam Everett .275 Mario Mendoza .251 Typically even very bad hitters won't have a very low BABIP, so any extreme deviation such as the team wide one we are experiencing is gonna come back to the average.
This is great news, and exactly what I was hoping for. I was dreading the possibility of them waiting until June versus calling him up after 11 games for an extra year of team control. Hopefully there will still be some cheap seats left tomorrow at the box office. Springer+$1 hot dogs....does it get any better?! Ok, maybe it does...but we're talking $1 hot dogs here!
BABIP's for some notable spectacular fielders Carlos Corporan .277 Brad Ausmus .288 Adam Everett .275 Mario Mendoza .251 Typically even great fielders won't have a very low BABIP, so any extreme deviation such as the team wide one we are experiencing is gonna come back to the average. Happy
Gonzalez is the only backup 2B, SS and 3B on the roster. I don't think Grossman can play those. Also, Grossman needs to get his head screwed on straight. He has to also be going through some mental issues defensively as he is mishandling routine plays way too often.
The other reason to send down Grossman is playing time. If you still have hope for him, and I think they do, he needs to be playing regularly in order to get out of the funk he's in right now. With Fowler and Springer here, that's 2 of 3 outfield spots that are essentially locked down every game. So you're really talking about only 1 spot available (LF), and at that spot, Hoes has all the starts against lefties. So all that remains is your LF against righties, and there's still Krauss and Presley in the mix for that. Grossman is probably a better prospect than either of those, but you can use the next month or so to evaluate the former two while letting Grossman sort himself out every day at OKC.

Plus grossman has options left whereas Presley does not. Hoes is hitting okay an I think they want Krauss to platoon with Guzman, at least until/if singleton come up mid-summer
