Brian Windhorst was on PTI's 5 Good Minutes just now and tooted the Melo to Rockets horn once again. He said 'they definitely believe they can create a salary spot' for Melo if he opts out.

That'd be one sick ass team.

I'm gonna enjoy the playoffs and look forward to the many Ron Paul gifs this summer.

I came here to post this exact thing. I was surprised to see the Rockets acknowledged on ESPN.

if melo opts out, we have to find a team (or two) to take asik and lin for cap space. easier said than done. but if melo opts out and chooses houston, the knicks would be smart to make it a S&T for asik and lin. think about it, melo says trade me to houston or i sign with the bulls. would the knicks really want melo in the eastern conference AND get nothing in return for losing him, or he could go to the west AND you get a starting center and starting PG (yes asik and lin are better than chandler and felton). this would be a no brainer for the knicks. It's the best consolation prize they could hope for.

what really interests me is what happens to parsons after that trade? do we roll with dwight, melo, bang, beard, bev? or do we look to trade parsons for an upgrade at PG or PF?

the problem is, not many players as good as chandler match his salary for a trade. and we wouldn't have any larger contracts to combine with chandler to get a higher paid player (as players of chandlers skill usually are). i think we would actually have to roll with melo at the 4 for a year, give chandler the extension he wants, and then look to trade him at the deadline for an upgrade at the 1 or 4.

still, having 2 of the top 5 scorers in the game on the same team, playing an up tempo offense, would be seriously dangerous. especially playing with dwight as a 3rd option in the post. pretty scary on offense. however, we would need great defenders at every other position.

the easiest thing to do would be for Melo to tell NYK before June 30th that they can trade him to Houston or he is opting out and walking. We could trade Asik/Lin plus a couple picks for him straight up and then help the Knicks unload JR and Felton. Knicks buy out both guys. We sign JR for the full MLE, Felton for BAE. Combine those expiring salaries with non-guaranteed like Casspi and Powell and you got a nice chunk of salary to add another player or two at next year's trade deadline.

Don't look now but Knicks are fixing to sign Lamar to a contract with next season non-guaranteed. What for? Just gonna cost them more money and they're already in the lux tax. Gonna gift Lamar free money for one game?????

It's all about having a non-guaranteed salary to help make a trade work.

*Don't be surprised if the Rockets sign somebody else tomorrow and drop Hamilton.

the other thing about all this is that if Melo sends the signal that he's leaving NY that could prompt Love to tell Minny he's not going to re-sign there and force them to trade him.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that we are going to get our 3rd superstar. And I think it happens by trade before the start of next season.
