For some reason, I can't stop giggling at the 1st part of your sentence. Good one. One tubby on this team is enough for my taste (MoT).
where did you hear this? Tubby Smith did coach with Rudy in the Sydney Olympics.. maybe thats a Rudy recommendation..
I'm interested in the job too. I've got a proven record on nba live, I have no problem yelling at overpaid people. I've got management skills. But seriously, there aren't many who aren't interested. By the way way, they're reairing the episode of BDSSP that contained GP's remarks about the coaching situation tonight, if anybody is interested.
The Rockets are going to have trouble finding a quality coach with NBA experience interested in this job. If the plan is to keep Carroll Dawson - some coaches will want to build thier own roster and fine tune the team. CD may have to go as well. If Van Gundy goes to Cleveland, and Larry Brown stays at Philadelphia, and no one here seems to like Silas( he would be my pick), that does not leave you with much. Hiring a college coach is going to be risky. I do not want a college coach. I like the guy at Denver ( trained under Riley), but he is under contract for several years I think. What do you guys think of Scott Skiles? I thought he did well at Phoenix. I like George Karl - he gave us hell. He consistently produced 58 win teams, but never could go to the finish line...Karl was good at dealing with fragile player egos like Payton, and Kemp... I think he is in his last year of his Milwaukee contract.... THis hiring is going to be tough. We have not looked for a coach for 11 years.
i don't think they showed that part tonight for some reason. The quick summery is that last night he said the rockets should hire from within since Rudy's move was health related and not the result of dissatisfaction with the team. I took it to be him callin Les on the claim that he wanted Rudy back and thought the team was going in the right direction. It sparked some, "Who cares what GP says" comments and such. Wasn't anything earth shattering, just interesting to hear was a high profile player had to say.
There are several good coaches out there but as of yet no one great. If Brown becomes available he's hands down the best bet. If not Riley, then Dunleavy, then JVG, then Silas, then Walton for all the difference it will make. Someone posted a statement that Riley may be interested and that we may be able to get him out of his contract as the Heat wipe the slat and rebuild, again. He's interesting but would bring a lot of baggage after the last couple seasons of losing badly and fighting with the refs... I think he is probably past his prime as a coach but he fits all of LA's criteria: proven winner, will pack the seats, respected around the league (if not liked)
Yeah, a coach would have to be crazy to want to take over a team with Yao Ming and Steve Francis on it. NOT! The truth is the Rockets are going to be able to pick from nearly any coaching candidate who's not already locked into a contract. Guys are going to be beating down the door to coach a team like this. Just look at the number of guys willing to coach crappy, no-potential teams every time there's an opening.
Tubby Smith is a damn good coach, but why the hell would he leave UK to come here. He's got probably the 4th best job in all of college hoops (after Duke, UNC, and Indiana). He gets paid the big bucks, and has all the job security in the world. No reason to jump ship for him just yet. Rick Barnes on the other hand....
Tubby Smith won't be coach because he just signed like a 10 year extension at Kentucky. But I think Pat Riley would be pretty cool as a coach. There's always Lenny Wilkens -- the only other guy to coach Hakeem in the last 12 years. Well, he's still the winningest coach in history!!!
