Not really familiar with Colbert, but I read an article about some alleged racism toward Asians on the part of this fellow so I'm a little bit concerned.
Maybe CBS is going to try something different and have Colbert do the show as his character. Maybe not. But if not, Colbert was funny and scored a success in creating his persona for comedy central. He deserves a shot at being closer to himself or whatever he wants to do for his late night stint. He's earned the chance to try and then he can be judged for that product.
He's probably tired of playing that character. I honestly thought he'd drop the act in 2008. So I can see why he'd want to do it. And he appeals to youngins, so I guess CBS thinks he'd be a good opponent to Fallon. Good for him. I hope it works out well. And if it doesn't, IDGAF because I don't watch these late night shows anyway.
Needs to have a "Colbert" vs "Liberal", both over the top, segment. Could be the next evolution of the The Report. -edit- He WILL NOT be in character, has already been stated and sourced several times.
I will miss him on the Colbert Report, but not surprising he wants something new and as big as this. Maybe John Oliver can take over for him?
Craig Ferguson must be rightly pissed with this. I wonder if Colbert plans to take his comedy writing staff with him. That would be a huge blow to CC if they try to find a new host for the Colbert Report.
Which is weird then because nobody really knows what he's normally like. He might not be likeable or relateable.
Are you serious? That was discredited and proven to be a disingenuous attack on Colbert. First he didn't control that twitter account (that was Comedy Central Stephen's account is @StephenAtHome) and it was a satire on Redskins owner Daniel Snyder's ridiculous "Original Americans Foundation"
Annnnnd.....I still won't watch CBS late night.... Would have preferred Craig Ferguson. ...although his interviews are awkward sometimes...
For real, Stephen is everything his character is not, infact, he is pretty much the polar opposite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Colbert He has always had an enthusiasm for arts and entertainment. I don't doubt he will take to and do well with the standard talk show format... in his own personality. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/DNvJZCFpdp8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/o8MMCLWGrpA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> balls as big as church bells: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/U7FTF4Oz4dI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
It is if the President and the Secret Service are sitting 10 feet from you. And people aren't lampoonable if they don't do lampoonable s**t. Take the moral high ground, be humble, promote the inherent worth of all people and it's pretty hard to be the butt of a joke.
Best of all time is pretty subjective... but yes, that interview rocks it. If he can pull that off on a nightly basis, he will be so so so so much better than the old guard. The new guard is better, though I think Fallon is a horrible interviewer - you can only do the aww-shucks I'm amazed by you act for so long. I love Ferguson's interviews because it's done as if he's drunk... which he does really well as a former addict. And Kimmel is good ala Colbert in the clip you provided, but not that good. Colbert's hilarious. I'd be shocked if he isn't good. Seems like a big win for CBS to me.... though I certainly sympathize with the no more mid-age white guy approach many have asked for, it would have been way too risky to do a Chelsea Handler type. Tina Fey was the only one that they might have pulled the trigger on, and she is basically a mid-aged white guy, but she's obviously not a guy.
