I watched a special edition of News 2 Houston Night News or whatever they call it...News at 10.....well they had like a 30 minute thing on Rudy. And Chris Wragge interviewed tons of people who attended the Spurs/Mavs game at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. He said the Rockets are aiming at Mike Dunleavy, Jeff Van Gundy, Larry Brown, and Doc Rivers. He asked Dunleavy...but he didn't know that the Rockets had already contacted him when he interviewed him...and was asking Dunleavy about how Jeff Van Gundy would do as head coach of the Rockets? And Mike Dunleavy said that almost any basketball expert would love to coach the Rockets and that we have built a very talented team. And Jeff Van Gundy has not been contacted by the Rockets yet...and has no comment...but did not agree with Cleveland. The Rockets are also going to attempt to get Larry and Doc...who are both under contract. Now can someone please tell me how the heck they could get them?

This short list of coaches isn't that bad.

Which one would fit best for the Rockets?

    Larry Brown
    Mike Dunleavy
    Doc Rivers
    Jeff Van Gundy

Oh yeah...and Jeff Van Gundy said that he did not know the owner Les Alexander...but he does know the owner Gund of the Cavs. And it seems like JVG is going to Cleveland or sticking with broadasting.

Can we get Brown as head coach and the others as assistants?

GP says we need to hire from within. Sounds like you support the Smith theory.

    My take:
Payton is calling out Les on Rudy's move. If Les promotes one of our coaches then we can assume that Les was happy with Rudy's methods and this really was Rudy's decision. If not then we know Les is the bad guy. Nice move Gary, or am I just being seeing conspiricies everywhere? Maybe reading all the drivel on this board has gotten to me!

Larry Brown is a winner. Period. Here is his NBA coaching record. This does not include the 3 ABA COY award winning years or his 'Final Four' college years with both UCLA and Kansas.

How are his X's and O's?Has he ever coached a succesfull NBA team? How does he handle his relation with his players?(tough?players coach?)

Wow. Larry Brown is definitely a winner..........VERY VERY EXPERIENCED.

He took the Olympic job from Rudy.
Now he should take the Rockets job from Rudy.

But I just don't know how they can get Larry Brown or even negotiate with him when he is under contract with another team.

The biggest drawback with Larry Brown being our coach is that I'm not sure he'll be here for the long run. He's had health problems in the past, and almost after every season he's been unsure he was going to return to coach the next season. While no doubt he's best candidate for the job, we need someone who will be more stable and grow with the team, and I think Paul Silas is the next best option.

I'm not opposed to Larry Brown as a coach but I would rather have Van Gundy.

    Both are proven winner...

Thats quite a selection of quality coaches. We cant go wrong with anyone of those guys.

Outitan, what makes you think Les gives a damn about what Gary Payton thinks?

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Larry Brown.

But until he ditches Philly, I'm sticking with JVG.

Mike Dunleavy was the former coach of the Trailblazers and took them to the 2000 WC Finals in a 7 game series against the eventual Champion Lakers. Or maybe it was in 99' that he did it. I know that the Trailblazers have talent out the ying yang, but he did about as good a job as could be expected out of his stoner teammates. I think he'd be a perfect fit for the Rockets and is my pick of the four coaches. Granted I never watched a lot of Trailblazer games and the style Dunleavy implemented when he coached them, but I'd take him over Larry Brown if only because Larry Brown is a defensive coach, and we're already a pretty good defensive team. I'd simply like someone that could get our guys to run the fastbreak the proper way and would teach this team how to run a good motion offense, or pick and roll offense. I honestly don't care what kind of offense as long as we average more then 98 points a game. Averaging 100 ppg next season would be fantastic but probably not realistic. The plain fact of the matter is this team isn't very offensive minded, so I say we fix that first.

The benefits of having Larry Brown however would be a strong sense of discipline from his teammates. While he couldn't always control his main player in A.I, I think he'd have a better shot at doing that with Francis, who I think is just a better version of A.I himself. Atleast we'd know we'd be getting the most out of our players with Larry Brown but everytime it seems like he's going to quit his relationship with the Sixers, he always comes back next season for more, so I honestly don't think he's an option.

Silas is an underrated coach and he'd be a nice fit, plus since the Hornets are moving into our division next year, his insight into his old players could prove crucial if we run into another wire to wire finish to get in the playoffs next season.

I'd like all 3 as head coaches, but my personal fave is Dunleavy. I remember people crediting a lot his success towards his assistant coaches, and we could definitely use some good assistant coaches. He's also the closest thing we have to a championship coach that's coached in the Western Conference.

Not a damned thing. I never said Les was concerned about this statement did I? Payton made a comment about the Rockets head coaching move, I thought it related to the board discussions, I posted it. Considering all the talk about bringing in Payton I think it is rather relavent....

Dude your giving way too much respect to the opinions of some loud mouth player who has no connections or associations with Houston. You posted the same thing in another thread a couple of times, so when you post it again here I took notice. I mean we are talking about the same Gary Payton who's played in Seattle for the past 10 years or longer, right? Not to be mean, but I guarantee you nobody cares how Gary Payton feels Les should go about hiring a new head coach. So, if Les doesn't hire Boylen or Smith as head coach, fat head in Seattle thinks Les is a bad person who wasn't really concerned for Rudy's health? Well then if were going look at it from Gary Paytons perspective, for the sake of this teams future success, I hope Les turns out to be bad bad man.
