On the nba tonight, mad dog carter said there were rumblings throughout the league about the use of Ming under Rudy. He said it didn't really have a direct impcat about the move to step down. He also said the owner was kind of worried about the development of the young players. I'm not sure he has Les's number, but its kind of interesting. He referred to Francis and company denying Ming the ball as "video basketball" . I guess he meant AND1 mixtape type of stuff or NBA Hoops ,ps2 edition. Just thought i might mention this.
how did he refer to ming's inability to get post position, back down people 50 lbs lighter, or shoot over people 6 inches shorter? or his unwillingness to play with authority? or the fact he was always tired? i'm sure he mentioned that to be fair and didn't just pile on like all the others who rode the "steve and cuttino suck" bandwagon all season long after riding the "steve and cuttino are great when they were making us win for the first 7 games through their amazing talent" bandwagon. other than the fact i'm sure he didn't mention it, i usually like fred. did he mention anything about your (and probably mine) boy cleamons being the coach?
Francis 4 Prez, How did the Lakers get Jabbar down there? Maybe start him at top, set a pick and let him roll into position? Did you see the Rocks do that? No, Gosh...I wonder why.... DD
Sometimes DD, you have to ignore these young people who don't know basic basketball. Prez- have you ever heard of ball reversal on a front? What about a flash to the ft line and a seal. How about a back pick and roll tothe front of the rim? I have one for you, what about on a pick and roll, when a 7'6 guy rolls and is 2 ft from the basket, how about giving him the ball instead of yo-yoing the ball and shooting from 19 ft. I haven't met a person yet who watches the Rockets play that agree on the way Ming was used.
Fred was making the same observation that everybody else who watched this team made all last season. He didn't recommend any solutions, and he didn't break it down for the pups like LBZ. So he doesn't get to be coach ;P Fred was piling on a bit. He might have even been saying this is why he's not suprised that Rudy is gone, No Discipline. You couldn't have played streetball on any other team in the league for the entire season, much less the last four years without the coach chewing your ass raw on a nightly basis.
I think it was pretty humbling that after almost every national televised game, the commentators said the same thing about the offense. How can anyone freeze out a player with his type of feel for the game. After about the first month of the season it was clear what Ming was confortable at and what he wasn't confortable at. There is no way in hell that 6'9 brian Grant should ever be able to front ming and he not get the ball. Kurt Thomas is a inch taller and no way he should have kept Ming from getting the ball. This team was outcaoched on so many times it wasn't even funny. I wonder about all those times when Ming came loose on pick and rolls did Rudy tell the guards to throw Ming the ball? This team especially from the guards were undisciplined.
Some of the geezers need to not change the channel when a commercial for a streetball tape comes on. I'm tired of the streetball accusation. When Steve and Cat start bouncing the ball off their defender's forehead and breakdancing on the perimeter, then I'll agree with the streetball assesment. Until then, then only thing I can complain about is that damn skipping Steve does. Damn, when you guys were our age, I think you really hated the ABA. Probably had premature heartattacks when the leagues merged as well. Old guy 1- "Look at that Julias Erving chap, I believe he goes by the alias of Dr. J." Old guy 2- "Hmm, yes, Dr. of thugary if you ask me with that demon basketball style he playes." Old guy 1- "Oh, my, I nearly dropped my monicle!" Old guy 2- "Indeed, I thought that would tickle your ribs!" Seriously, you guys remind me of the old guys in the balcony from the Muppet Show. Just cranky old men with nothing better to do than bash other people.
In defense of the Streetball callers... when I say that I am refering to ISO ball with no regard for offensive rotation. Thats the kind of streetball I think of. I don't call it gym ball because they pass more than we do in the gym. If say that I saw AND1 recording the Rockets games to prove that their players are ready for the NBA then i'll accept all the criticism for my disdain for what was our offensive system you can give.
dude, you're blowing the thing out of proportion. there doesn't have to be all those flashy things in order for it to be considered "streetball". all francis and mobley do is play 1on1 ball...they don't use yao nearly enough. if they actually passed it to him in the post, they'd be able to use one of his best attributes...his passing.
Its not that, its more of the behind the back dipsy doodle plays instead of the basic plays that are mentioned. Who doesn't think Payton,Kidd,Stockton and guys like that can't do the same things with the ball? They don't do it because in the nba the window to make that pass on time to a open guys is similar to taht of a nfl qb. I remember times when Francis would have a break and the wings would be filled and he would yo-yo with his head down then throw a pass when the man is too far unde the goal. I've seen him and his crew run a simple pick and roll and deliver the ball too late and the guy was either under the rim or the defense reacted. Why did this happen? Between the legs behind the back, crossover 3 or 4 times instead of just delivering the ball. I think one of the best games Francis played was the 11pt 11 asst game he had in the season. Some reason he was mad at some comments and went out to prove people wrong. What he did was show that if he wants to, he could be the pg everyone thinks he can be. Of course after a couple of games like this, he went back to the old bs. The only thing keeping Francis from being like GP or Kidd is the big head he has on his shoulders and that it. If he really wants to be the pg everyone wants him to be and thinks he can be, his mentality has to change about the position. If he gets is teammates good shots and layups and stuff, he will get easier shots automatically.
Fred Carter: "Believe me...Yao Ming will be a force and there will be more banners to be hung in Houston"
True. But I think Dadakota is correct in his thinking. The bottom line is that there are numerous ways to utilize Yao. Simply having Yao bang away in the low post is not always the best option. With that said, it would be nice to see the coaching staff utilize some more creative ways for Yao to get the ball. Yao seems very adept at catching it out in the high post (like what he showed in the Asian games).
Guys... Call me a Rudy lifer if you want. That said, I ALWAYS want a coach that has the teams interest at heart. I'll bring up this thread again when the NEW coach comes on. I'm pissed!
Admit you are stupid before you make any more comments about NBA basketball because you definitely don't know what you are talking about.
