We have not clinched the 8th spot mathematically. We lose out were 50-32, Suns and Grizz win out they are 51-31, no tie breaker on Grizz. We need another win or one Suns loss to clinch 8th spot.

Just noticed Grizz and Suns play each other 2nd to last game but if Suns win out and Grizz only lose to Suns rest of way. Since we don't have tie breaker on Grizz they still would have 8th spot if we dropped last 7. I don't believe we will, I just think ppl jumped the gun on dashing we clinched a spot when we mathematically haven't

Math isn't wrong, I'm not a mathematically genius but I can figure this playoff clinch is not correct

The Suns and Grizzlies have 6 games left on their schedule, one against each other. If the Rockets have 7 and if they lose out, they're 50-32.

If the Grizzlies win out, and the Suns win every game except the Grizzlies game, then the Grizzlies are 51-31 and the Suns are 50-32. The Suns lose the tiebreak 2-1 (Head to head) and the Grizzlies are 7, Rockets are 8, Suns are 9.

If the situation is reversed, then the Suns are 51-31 and the Grizzlies are 50-32. The Rockets are Grizzlies are tied head to head, but the Rockets win the tiebreak on division record since they'd be 9-7 (3 games left vs. NO x 2 and SAS) and the Grizzlies would be 5-11 (2 games left vs. SAS and DAL). Suns would be 7, Rockets would be 8, and Grizzlies would be 9.

Essentially, only one of the Suns and Grizzlies can ever beat the Rockets on total record--the other will tie. And the one that ties will always lose the tiebreak.

That's why ScriboErgoSum's chart shows that the Rocket's tiebreak over the Suns and Grizzlies is final.

Gotcha, thought Grizz had tie breaker on us, something just didn't seem right about the standings. So we have clinched at least the 8th spot in the most fragile sense but its a clinch. I never thought we would actually drop 7 games or Suns would beat OKC, MEM and SAS to win out their last 6. Just need to get that 4 spot now!

No takers before yesterday's games I see, and definitely not after. We get all panicky here way too easily (myself included, lol). Odds were in the Rockets favor to finish #4 with HCA and generally, what most likely is going to happen will happen.

The Rockets are a strong deep team with a bevy of talent and a great coaching staff. There was absolutely no reason to panic. They are actually more likely to overtake the Clips for third than drop out of fourth.

Agreed. We claimed the tie break with the Grizz even before we lost those two games to them with their abysmal division record.

Why would anyone question if we clinched a playoff spot after Morey said we did?

Scribo, that's just not true. GSW has the better conference record, there is no mathematical way they end up with worse conference record tiebreaker. There are no games left with the East on the schedule to make up the difference.

You are correct. I'm running on a profound lack of sleep and mixed up their conference records. Golden State at this point has won the tie breaker since they have clinched at least a tie in the head to head and would win the conference tie break should the two teams wind up with the same record.

The only number i'm concerned with now is #3. The number of wins we have over Portland and San Antonio this season.

A clinch is a clinch is a clinch. There is nothing fragile about it.

Speaking of Shaq - anyone seen any of the Rox on Shaqtin' lately? There has been some funny stuff happening in the past few games - Harden tripping himself on an iso, Canaan breaking his own ankles at half court, Lin passing to a bending down Harden who didn't even react etc.

Need the standings to stay the same except with Memphis either dropping out or moving to 7th.

Clinched the #7 seed

Here is the latest batch of Magic Numbers after all games were played on 4/6.

Rockets pull out a nice win
It was great to see Asik and Canaan play well as the Rockets beat the Nuggets 130-125 in overtime. The Rockets nearly let this one slip away, but the pull it out and dropped all Magic Numbers 1. With that we close out the Suns and Grizz and clinch the #7 seed.

Blazers and Warriors keep winning
The Blazers clinched a Playoff berth by beating the Pelicans 100-94. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 and collected 18 boards, and Nicolas Batum added 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Blazers stay a game up on the Warriors.

Fresh off firing another assistant coach, the Warriors destroyed the pathetic Utah Jazz 130-102. Stephen Curry had 31 points and 16 assists, Klay Thompson scored 33, and Mark Jackson managed not to fire anyone else. The Warriors stay a game back of Portland and control their own destiny on the #5 seed.

The Grizz fall back – WHAT freaks out
In the dogfight for the last two Playoff spots, every little misstep is costly. The Grizz got dealt a cruel opponent when they traveled to San Antonio. Despite Tony Parker playing just 9 minutes before leaving with back spasms, the Spurs machine keeps on rolling as they blew out the Grizz 112-92. Kawhi Leonard and Manu Ginobili led the Spurs with 26 each. James Johnson had a team high 20 points, and Mike Conley added 18 points and 6 assists. The Grizz fall a game back in the loss column to both Dallas and Phoenix and currently sit at #9.

The Suns also faced a stiff test when they traveled to OKC, but Phoenix closed on a 10-3 run in the last few minutes to pull out a high-scoring
121-114 victory. Goran Dragic scored 26 points and dished 5 times, and Gerald Green added 24 off the bench in another strong showing. The win puts them a full game ahead of the Grizz for #8. Durant had a team high 38 points and 11 boards, and Westbrick chipped in with 33. The Thieves are only two games up on the Clippers and go to LA for the second game of a back-to-back on Tuesday and Wednesday. I’m betting Brooks will choose to rest Westbrick for the Kings game. The Clippers have the tie break.

The Mavericks won their third straight by hanging on to beat the Kings 93-91 despite an off night from Dirk. Monta Ellis 2.0 scored 23 points to go with 4 boards and 4 assists, and Vinsanity added 15 off the bench. The Mavs needed this win to stay at #7. They’ll also need to beat Utah on Wednesday before they close with Spurs, Suns, @Grizz.

The Battle of LA
It’s still a bit strange seeing the Clippers be the class team in the LA series, but I never tire of the Lakers losing as the JV team lost 120-97. Blake Griffin had 23 points, 7 boards, and 5 assists, and Chris Paul also scored 23 to go with 6 dimes. The Clippers get to rest in anticipation of their suddenly interesting matchup with the Thieves on Wednesday.

The NBA takes a night off
The NBA takes its annual night off while the NCAA championship game takes place. We’ll pick this back up on Tuesday.
