Im sure a few of you have heard the news that Reebok has offered Lebron a $75 Million dollar shoe deal.

Some of us know that Yao is also a shoe free agent too.

To me Yao seems way more marketable not to mention more globally attractive than Lebron James.
But, it has been said big men dont sell shoes.

Does anyone else think that Yao should land a huge shoe deal too?

Reebok offered Lebron that much money because the only two big name stars they have are Iverson and Francis. Yao won't get anything close to $75 million if he stays with Nike...Adidas might offer him more now that Kobe is gone...

It's bad for team chemistry that our two star players are competitors in selling shoes ... :D

Yao won't get a big shoe deal. "Big Men" traditionally don't sell shoes. Shaq doesn't sell shoes. It is the high flying guards and small forwards that sell shoes to the kids these days.

Yao "seems" more marketable in the global scale but I am not so sure "shoes" are something that he will sell well. How many people want the vertical that Yao has? Versus LeBron James vertical. That's how kids think and why the high flyers sell the shoes.

Yao will get a nice shoe deal but it won't be anything close to what the high flying guards will get.

Yao has more appeal in selling other products like Pepsi, Gatorade and other things.

yao's not more marketable at all. even darko milicic is probably more marketable than yao. darko if i'm not mistaken already signed a deal with and1 recently.

yao won't be able to sell shoes in china either cause kids will want to grow up as 6'6 shooting guards who fly like lebron and not layup balls and miss them like yao.

    50 million. Just my guess.

My assessment is that when Yao was 16 he got a shoe deal from Nike worth 12 million. Now Nike would be crazy to offer any less than 30 million since Reebok and And1 are in the running. So Yao's prices are going up. Although I agree with whoever that said big men don't sell shoes, Yao is unique in this sense in that he's global and just about any non redneck likes him. Therefore 50+ million assuming he signs the same length contract as Lebron

Now to explain why I think he won't go any higher. Lebron is hyped beyond belief. Even when Yao came out he had many doubters, Lebron has none, despite the obvious imperfections in his game (ie. shooting). And we all know of course that style is what people remembers, not skills, so it's quite clear that Yao won't sell as many shoes and will get a lesser deal.

Now having said that, if Lebron doesn't live up to his hype (especially next season, because it's quite impossible), his stock will drop and Yao's will keep going up.

when yao was 16? i don't know if that's when he signed the deal with nike, but nike didn't pay him 12 million or even one million. he got signed for several years for a total value of $200 thousand or 100 thousand. you exaggerate way too much.

75Mil, shoe ads??? That's just crazy. The economy is down, people out of job ... This is better than
hitting power ball lotto. You know the media mob
can change their faces 3 times a day.

you must be drunk. cause yao got paid around 200 thousand for around 4 years i think.

i know nike tried to offer yao's agent around 1 million at the nba draft time last year, but yao's agent held out and tried to get 2 million to which nike refused citing reasons that yao is not worth $2 million for a long term contract. that just shows you how useless and unmarketable yao ming is in the shoe market. nike themselves know that chinese people would still rather buy shoes by kobe, or iverson or jordan or lebron.

in fact, it was a shock to everybody that yao became as marketable in apple commercials and gatorade and visa. nobody really watches yao for his skills. the only reason people started to get interest in watching him play was cause there were so many doubters. charles barkley made yao a star and shawn bradley getting dunked on helped too.

You are in for a laugh, aren't you?

No surprise though. You are the one who said you prefered Amare's game to Yao's, aren't you?

Build a nice shoe and people will buy
regardless of who endorses it. I havent boughten a shoe just because an athlete endorsed it in a long long time

what's so funny about what i said? it's the truth isn't it. yao still doesn't have a new shoe deal and he's getting less money offered to him. meaning he's probably less marketable.

what's so surprising about what i said? amare's game is played with more style and flair and yeah i always have preferred watching that type of game. without that style and flair, basketball is boring. But amare plays on another team so i'm not a fan of him or anything. But even though yao is more skilled, he doesn't play with any style or flair, plus he's 7'6 so its boring. i was talking about entertainment value and for entertainment value, style and flair get points.

personally, i don't buy any shoe because of an athlete. i think these shoe companies are wasting their money. i buy nike cause i like their style and their logo.

it's not just big guy's lack of a vertical. it also has to do with the fact that the majority of big guys are ugly. take yao for example. :D
