I just heard some of the least intelligent radio banter about the first pick. I'm not going to put their names out there, but they were definitely suggesting that if the Texans thought that there was a QB worthy of a top 35 pick, that player should be the overall first pick in the draft. Now we all know QB desperation is a real thing, but that's just sad.
Also I think it's nice to hear BOB say what I've been saying for months, that there is not a lot of separation between the QB prospects in this draft. Now that could be just a smokescreen, but I doubt it.
Even if BOB had his mind made up about taking a QB at #1 already he would have still said the same thing on NFL Network...but I don't doubt that he's telling the truth.
Yeah. I'm completely shocked Bortles has risen from a 5th round-undrafted project/HB caliber player to first pick potential in a matter of 3 months based purely on tools. You'd think I'd learn considering the same thing happened with Jamarcus Russel, Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Tannehill and a ton of other QB's in the recent past.
here is the actual video of the link: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-am/0ap2000000336265/O-Brien-There-s-no-question-we-ll-draft-a-QB
"Not a lot of separation" means he's either bluffing (which is completely plausible and quite frankly likely) or there's no way we take a QB in round 1.
"There is not a lot of separation between the QBs and there are more QBs than just these three.." - Bill OBrien This speaks volumes of how the Texans think of this QB class...There is no one that stands out...Now why are we all still thinking that a team that has a chance to get the #1 pick overall will settle for any such QB???
I found it remarkable that he was spouting off the names of all the options at QB with Mettenberger, Logan, etc...
Sticking with drafting the best DL or OL in the draft - trading down a bit would be great for an extra pick - we need so much help in those two areas. OL has been questionable last two years, and D Line hasn't given the pressure needed as a group in quite a while. Dominant O Line gives us a running game which opens up passing - D Line stops a running game which helps to close down their passing.
The danger is reading into a comment like that and thinking that all the QBs are going to end up the same so it doesn't matter who you pick (and thus, when you pick them). That's not going to be the case. Some will probably make it, some won't, and one will probably emerge as the best. Saying "there's not a lot of separation" doesn't mean they're all essentially the same, it just mean you're having a hard time projecting which one is going to end up the best.
BoB is not going to spill the beans on their draft plans. Even if they already knew who they were taking.
Actually, I feel that Im looking at his comments objectively. When B'OB speaks, I find him candid, intelligent(to avoid disclosing his hand), and concise. The following are the things i took away from his comments from the NFL network clip: 1. In regards to Matt Schaub: He thinks he is an intelligent and successful NFL QB that may just need a change of scenery. 2. In regards to picking a QB via draft: "I dont think there is a question that we will draft a QB in the draft. Where we draft that QB, we dont know that yet..." I look at this comment as a statement that the Texans acknowledge the need for a drafted QB. B'OB states that the QB via the draft is gonna happen. (And based on probability, I am sure the Texans invest in a draft pick that is one of their top three selections they have in 2014.) 3. Looking not just at the top three "good" QBs who had great careers, but evaluating all the other 10-12 prospects in this draft. The NFL always looks for distinction, and in 2012 there was a clear distinction in Luck and Rg3 from the rest of the pack. For a college/NFL head coach not to be able to see if certain guys stand out from the big 3 names mentioned all offseason tells me a lot of the rankings given so far...which to me seems meh... I have no given insight, and Im just a fan...that being said, having a chance to get the #1 overall rarely occurs. And unless you can clearly see a distinctive quality from the big three names from the rest of the pack, there is zero reason to invest the highest draft pick on a player that might just be that "meh" pick...
If I'm reading into this, I think the vibe he's putting out there (may or may not be a smokescreen) is that we're taking Clowney. That's why BO'B is stating that there are a number of good QBs. This is a positive for the trade value of the 1-1 pick, since in my view it's more likely that a team will trade up for Clowney rather than one of the QBs.
