No way, if JVG has any influence on the offense we'd be bottom 10-15 offensively and top 5-8 defensively. JVG's offense was absolutely atrocious and had no creativity. This team's offensive principles keep it in the top 5-10, but when push comes to shove we need some creativity out there to get past the stifling defenses of the Clippers, Thunder and Grizzlies we've suffered through. Our offense right now is very inflated. If someone has our numbers for the season, could they do a side by side of: Offensive averages(thus far in the season) vs. offensive averages(vs. Grizz, OKC and Clippers individually). No one gives two flying ****s about yadda yadda yadda, all that matters is we get a ring. As currently constructed, we're too limited offensively to win close games down the stretch in the playoffs and too disoriented defensively to make up for it. JVG would be welcomed on the sideline but strictly for defensive purposes. Nothing more.
Honestly just a thought. I would love to see JVG apart of the Rockets again. He is the only commentator that demonstrates his ideals on national TV and I agree with every last one of them that I've heard. I don't know how effective he is as a coach but if he's as good as what I've heard then his involvement is welcome.
He wouldn't have to quit ESPN. Back when Bill Walton was doing the national games like JVG is now, he was still a regular broadcaster for the Clippers. He just wouldn't do the Clippers games when he had to do a national game.
Funny people blame JVG for the Rockets offense supposedly being not good. The team replaced JVG with supposed offensive guru Adelman and Adelman ended up running a similar style of offense and achieving a similar level of offensive efficiency (and defensive efficiency) as JVG's teams did with Yao and McGrady. The team's talent was what caused the Rockets to play the way it did and achieved the result that it did.
Van Gundy would be nice in a Lawrence Frank role of writing a report per game, and additionally interacting via video feed with the analytics staff, the coaches, and (on a need-to basis) the players for general basketball knowledge as well as specific fixes. Like many others here, I am very concerned that the Rockets analytics and coaching staff lacks elite NBA coaching expertise to draw upon. Van Gundy would make an excellent sounding board, tend to patch up any holes.
