I have a copy of W2K, but dont know if I should upgrade from 98. Are there any pitfalls if I do upgrade to 2000? W98 has been real b****y lately....

Also I could go for XP. Is this the best option?

We had '98 then we upgraded to Millenium. It's nothing special compared to '98. There aren't many changes made.

Drew - go to 2k now.

It is night and day better than Win98. So stable you will not believe it.

If you want some more eye candy get WinXP, its basically Win2k with WinMillenium's home features... I use XP. It has some nice features like a built in firewall, internet sharing, remote desktop, web server and it's great with multimedia.

2k Server/Client is probably the best product line Microsoft has EVER produced. Make sure to load SP3 and all security updates via http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

My friend installed Window2k on his computer and he had a lot of trouble with playing games at home. So if you play a lot of games, you might want to consider that. I have ME right now but I'm getting XP this week.

Yes... you'll have to format and reinstall.

It's a pain. I just did it today on my computer.

    :)

Maybe, maybe not. Some may work ok, others won't. It will be worth it as soon as you see how stable Win2k is.

I love re-formatting my HD. It gets rid of all the spyware and other crap that slows down my CPU.

Go with Windows 2k or Windows XP Pro. I had both of my HDs die on me last week, but on the upside it did give me a good chance to upgrade to Windows XP Pro.

You might want to consider that Microsoft is no longer supporting Win98 in any way, shape or form. Meaning if some crisis pops out then that's it. I love Win2000 and am currently using XP and find that it is pretty good as well despite what some people have said about it. If you are upgrading, considering going all the way to XP if your computer can handle it. Then you won't have to worry about support issues and compatibility with newer software/hardware at least for what another 6 months or so :) Although some of your older programs (Win 98 only or earlier) might have some trouble in XP. Good luck.

W2K is a very different OS from 98. While it's much more stable then 98 (and secure with the proper patches - run windows update) it is also more picky about the hardware and software that it runs. Remember, W2K was designed for businesses while 98 was built for the home user with way more backward compatibility in mind.

The two main problems you may have with W2K are hardware incompatibility and/or software incompatibility. Windows XP should be much more forgiving so, given the choice between W2K and WXP I would choose XP. XP is really the next version of W2K anyways.

If you have a choice, then run XP.

If you are a gamer...go with XP..game compatablilty is much better than 2000

if not, ah hell..go with XP...its ok..I hate the default interface, but it is easy to set to look like 2000.
