What about when they were flying at 45,000 feet... wouldn't that save a bunch of fuel?

Not sure. I'm no expert, but just physically, there has to be a sweet spot where air resistance is fairly minimal but there's enough air to provide lift, etc.

I was reading on the pilots forum that it would cut flight time by half to fly that low.

So now we have to consider a mid-air (or ground) refueling, or a Bane-like heist of certain passengers or cargo. Sounds legit.

You also need air to mix in the jet engines at a certain altitude there is not enough to ignite.

The sweet spot, it seems, is called the "service ceiling," and according to wikipedia, that is 43,000 ft. for the 777 jet. Above that, and you're being counterproductive (presumably due to the thinner air and the issues DaDa and I brought up.)

Yeah, the higher you go, the longer the arc length between two points on the surface....hmm, I guess

Here's a good addition to the crazy Russian report:

I'm no pilot. However, if you decrease your altitude from 30,000 to 5,000 feet, you are only decreasing your arc length by a tenth of one percent, since the radius of the Earth is about 21 million feet. Therefore, even if you could go normal cruising speed at 5,000 ft (crazy? impossible?), you would only pick up an extra distance of 0.1%, just based on kinematics.

That link you posted is super creepy/crazy/questionable?

An intriguing theory, for sure, that MH370 closely followed in the "shadow" of another 777 thus confusing radar and essentially concealing themselves.

Farfetched? Possibly. Worth considering? At this point, absolutely.

Nothing says "legit" in your articles like MS Paint drawn diagrams.

I seriously don't know what to think... Im starting to think they went into a time warp or a black hole or something.
