They seem very awkward. I don't like moving with my left hand on the right end of the keyboard and using the mouse to look around. pg up pg down doesn't aim quickly. In short, the experience leaves a lot to be desired. Engine seems fun. Any tips? A joystick, perhaps?
Use the WSAD setup. W forward, A strafe left, D strafe right, S backwards. Assign all other keys to convenient locations for you around those keys. Reload may want to put at a key farther away but easy to reach, since reloading at the wrong time gives away your position and eliminates your ability to return fire. Use mouse look. Did you play single player Half-Life?
This is my setup for CS Duck: Ctrl. Reload: Shift Shoot: Mouse 1 (left click) Jump: Mouse 2 (right click) foward: W strafe left: A (as Woofer suggested) strafe right: D backwards: S Guns secondary option: mouse scroll You might want to try and increase youre mouse sensitivity (which is under Controls then andvanced.) This well allow you to aim/ look around quicker. Also if the server allows it check "autoaim." It would be awesome if we could get a cc.net dedicated server!
Personally, I have one of those Nostromo SpeedPads -- THEY RULE. But when I was using the keyboard, I used a different setup: U - Forward J - Backward H - Strafe Left K - Strafe Right L - Jump G - Crouch Then the other keys are different based upon the game. The WASD is kind of the default standard, but for whatever reason I did it this strange way. The Keyboard-Mouse combo takes some time to get to used to, but once you get used to it, you'll never know how you did without it.
The FPS I'm playing most nowadays is America's Army. I like the fact that it tracks your level permanently, and that you can get admins on any official server to kick/ban cheaters/foul mouthed kids, or at the least, vote them off.\ The price is right, too.

Counter Strike is a pretty good game....one of the best ever....kinda old........VERY addictive...but I play on and off......the thing I hated was lag. Anyways...we should play together. A Clutch City Counter Strike Server!
Set your controls in single player, and practice in single player. IIRC, most boxed versions of Half-Life have a single player component.
WASD for me... i still don't know all the controls, I mostly play iceworld and dustworld and it's just a shoot em up fest. I am not really good at the game, as a matter of fact, my nick is bulletsponge! But damn do I have fun playing, I love CS and the game play. I'm off to play right now!
you might have fun playing on a warcraft mod server too... anyhow i use the keypad and my mouse...its nice having a 5 button mouse.
S= forward A= Strafe left D= Strafe right X=back That is what I have used since Descent, and I am top 1% in the world on Battlefield 1942 right now. DD
Thanks very much, guys. This is the best bbs. Yes, I am slow. I waited till the game cost $ 9.00 . I have the retail ver. half-life game of year, w/cs and of. I have to figger out the update process, now. Played a bit of half-life single plr, found controls bothersome. Also, too much plot and puzzles. bleh. I don't want to figger out your stupid jumping puzzle, programmer. Just give me dynamic shooting action, please. Read the walk-through online. Sounds terrribly lame. Jumping from pipe to pipe and crawling through air vents sux. Oh, wrong turn! How droll! So, switching to CS, now. Just getting through the training sim. Thanks again for the help.
i said, "screw the training mode" and jumped straight in to 'net play... I mostly play iceworld and dustworld. you have the option to filter your search for servers, when you do, filter for fy_iceworld, pick a good fast server and GO FER IT!!! lots of fun.
