After a timeout, Harden collected an inbound pass from Lin in front of the Blazers’ bench and instantly launched a tough, contested three with Matthews in his face. It swished, and the game was tied at 106-106.

On the next play, the Blazers had a chance to win despite their late-game shortcomings. But Nicolas Batum, continuing a perplexing trend, botched the inbound pass. From the sideline, Batum heaved an alley-oop lob to Lillard at the rim. But it never had a chance as Lin read the play from the start and stole the ball in midair. It was one of a handful of inbound blunders by the Blazers. At one point, when they failed to execute and Batum was forced to call a timeout on the sideline to avoid a five-second violation, coach Terry Stotts was so angry you could hear him scream from the 20th row. But he didn’t admonish the late-game alley-oop try.

“Damian was coming wide open,” Stotts said. “Jeremy Lin made a really good read. He left Mo open in the corner and Damian broke open. It’s just — Jeremy Lin made a really good read on it.”

Blazers ran a legit play and it almost worked. Just shows you how good help defense takes the team to another level.
