PSJ's post got me thinking. . . what could we really rely on this year? this poll, though I'm sure it will turn into an excuse to bash all things Rocket, is really not intended to be such. I was able to watch roughly a 1/4 of the games this year. so there are definitely people here more qualified to speak on our offensive capabilities. mainly, I'm just at a loss as for what we could really, really rely on at any given point. that doesn't seem good. anyway, let's have the opinions.
Mo T on the right block was automatic and would force the team to double helping the rest of the team.
Taylor’s hook shot. Probably not a good sign when a role-player of the bench has the most consistent shot on the team.
1.Yao dish to a cutter. You can often count on Yao to make the right pass and get someone a high percentage shot. 2. Francis pull up jump shot was good also, but it bogged down the offense and was relatively low %, compared to Yao at least. 3. Yao in the post was good too, as his high FG% indicates, but he doesn't have the strength to be consistent.
Here's my ranked of most dependable shots of Rox: 1. Yao Ming's dunk. Yao Ming's fade away; Yao Ming's finger roll; Yao Ming's 17 footers; Yao Ming's up and under; Yao Ming's Bank shot; Yao Ming's free throws; Yao Ming's spin baseline drive 2. Franchise & Cat's dunk 3. Cato's Dunk 4. Posey's Dunk 4. Eddie Griffin's Dunk 5. Mo T's Jump hook 6. Rice's 3 pointers
Don't just blame poor execution of p-n-r's on the guards. Too many times I saw the big man roll before he even set the damned pick!
Actually Rice's open top of the key 3 pointer was a pretty consistant shot, but since it's not there I'll have to go with Mo in the pant with the baby hook. And who voted for Eddie Griffin 3pter?
well, for what it's worth, I've found this to be marvelously insightful. given the votes so far, it seems like Mo Taylor needs to play a more prominent role for this team. a poor man's Chris Webber. it looks like the logical offense for us should be: Yao and Francis working a screen-n-roll from the high post, Francis driving, or Yao shooting a midrange jumper, or Yao dishing to a cutter to the basket, or Mo Taylor getting the ball on the low block for a post move. it seems to me like all of that could work together fairly flawlessly.
I don't know if I agree with Yao-to-a-cutter as our 2nd-most reliable play. it seems like that play lead to too many turnovers for it to be our 2nd-most reliable. maybe not, though.
Good thread. Really thought provoking..proves how inconsistent all of the Rockets were. Couldnt make a definite pick.
Rice's three pointer WAS the Rocket's best shot for the 2002-03 season. Rice had the highest 3 pt. average on the team for players who averaged at least one attempt per game. His average was .398 on threes which means he averaged 1.194 points for every attempt. Any two point attempt by any one player would have to be good almost 60% (.597) of the time to be as effective. Needless to say, we didn't have anything that effective. Sadly, The Eddie Griffen 3 probably was the best shot on the poll. At pretty much one point per attempt (.333 3pt avg.), it was as good as any two point attempt that was 50% effective. Never underestimate the power of the three pointer.
my thoughts exactly... lol I voted for Steve's drive to the hole. Why not? We didnt give Yao the ball enough and I couldnt say "Yaos pass to cutter" because no one cutted very much.
