-Rockets under perform this offseason, get rid of Mchale which sparks interest from PJ

-Rockets overachieve in the postseason. But have a miserable start to next season, Dwight calls for PJ to become next coach. Mchale resigns & we hire PJ

-Rockets overachieve this postseason. We somehow aquire another big name superstar, but have a poor start to next season. Mchale fired. PJ interested

For some reason, I can see Jackson coming either here or OKC. Maybe OKC has the slight advantage. But given Dwight called for PJ in LA, who's to say Jackson doesn't lean towards Houston. We definitely have the starpower and young talent to make it work. IF it did happen, how would you see this play out?

SIDENOTE: Phil Jackson & Daryl Morey would two VERY intelligent basketball minds. They could surpass anything we've ever seen.

I don't think Phil and Morey would be able to work together.

PJ is retired..he has virtually no interest in coaching right now. But anyway, if we get Durant or LBJ to join, then it might tweak his interest.

    1. He's not ever coaching again. He's an old man recovering from serious illness who probably couldn't handle a young man's job anyway. What is he now, age 70? Age is not "just a number" for those 70 and over. It's "just a number" for people up to their 60s, depending on the shape they're in, but by age 80 everyone seems to fall apart no matter what.

He's ready for Pat Riley-style complete control over all basketball organizations. Bye Morey? No.

It'd be nice to hire him as a full-time consultant for whatever price he demands, though. Be it to sit next to McHale a few games here and there, while also mentoring Morey on the basketball side of things, which as ex-player and ex-championship coach he surely has more experience in both.

    2. He's not coming over to the Astros.

he wont come here (or to any team) unless he's sure he can win the title, + i dont think his health would allow him to coach again

He only associates with big markets, so OKC is out of the question! He started out in New York, went to Chicago, then LA.

NY is obviously the biggest city, and when he went to Chicago it was 2nd at the time, then LA. Guess what city's fourth?

P.S. - What I'd do is bring him over and systematize whatever unique basketball knowledge he has, into Morey's player selection and into coaching, provide feedback on the analytic approach.

Teams like Chicago and L.A. must have developed fairly sophisticated systems of their own.

One or two years of picking his brain would be nice.

But his price is $10 million a year. Are you sure you wouldn't want 66 fresh-faced MIT and Harvard grads at $150,000 a year over one Phil Jackson?

I don't know if NBA coaches are all that bright in comparison to the average Harvard student. It's that to get the job, one has to have the relevant life experience in organized basketball, which 99.99% of the population never receive the chance to. To me, this means (1) to have played organized basketball - like Morey, at the high school level at minimum. (2) To have been hired by a basketball organization.

The life of the analytics movement is that if you merely have an interest in basketball or sport, and have mathematical/analytical talent, you can feed the engine that runs an organization contingent on competitive play and smart management.

Coaching, on the other hand, takes a leader of men. There are very few genius tacticians, who are brilliant analysts and leaders of men. Hence the division of front office and coaching staff. Normal distribution tells you as much is necessary.

The only scenario I could see is if Lebron came here. Phil Jackson is the best ever at walking into the most talented team in the NBA and taking credit for what they do then ducking out when their talent level drops. The ultimate opportunist.

    I acknowledge those points.

But in such things what always happens is, someone who is a world class practitioner and has the technical aptitude eventually comes along, and unifies both areas in his one person, and that system sets the new global standard.
