I just watched that old video of clips of Yao when he was in China and on the Olympic team. http://www.clutchcity.net/video/yao_clips_0623.rm Man, Everytime I see it I think, "Damn once this guy gets comfortable like he was in China he will be amazing". Its like he has this swagger in those clips that he lacked sometimes in the NBA. Man I love to see it and I can't wait till he gets that swagger in the NBA. This guy is just gonna be flat out sick in a couple years when Yao is tossing up 275 on the bench and pushing other guys around like he was pushed around this year. I'm still hoping that maybe he can add 3 or 4 inches to that paltry vertical too ;). Anyhow, I know its been said a million times before, but I had to say it again.

I checked out that clip couple months ago too. Yao looks amazing in that clip, especially when he play against Gary Payton & the USA team. He can dish, he can shoot, he can flat out block shots and rebounds. The one thing impressed me most is although chinese national team really sucks, Yao moves really well within the team structure. He's all over the place and directing traffic on court too. I can really see when a team is really playing like a team or just a team of ballers going one on one.

I really believe Yao's the answer for Shaq once he gets stronger.

I hope he benches more than 275! He weighs about 300. I am hoping Yao can bench twice his own weight but I think thats asking too much. Shaq weighs about 350, and I am almost certain he benches twice his weight.

Come on man, you're saying Shaq can bench 700 lbs?! Benching over 700 lbs. is world-class weightlifting level. When Shaq came into the league, his bench press was actually pretty weak for his size from what I recall. Shaq's max bench press a couple of years ago was 375 lbs, so unless he's been taking his vitamins the past couple of years, he's still around that mark.

Shaq as rookie, COULD NOT bench 225lbs.

    Bar, and four 45lb plates.

P.S. I can't remeber if it was 135lbs or 225lbs. All I can recall was I thought, "Man, Shaq is weak!"

Are you sure about that? I could've swore I heard a commentator say that Shaq could bench double his own weight. I am not sure but looking by the size of his arms and the definition of his arms, it'd looked about right.

    From Jim Cotta

    Shaq's work out:

The Big Guy actually likes working his legs, so doesn't object to a routine that trains them two to three times a week. Here's what it takes to build those legs of Steel:

    LEG PRESS

    Warm-up (180 lbs. - 20 reps)
    Warm-up (270 lbs. - 15 reps)
    1 set (360 lbs. - 12 reps)
    1 set (450 lbs. - 10 reps)
    1 set (550 lbs. - 6-8 reps)

    No way. That's 700lbs!

Shaq can bench around 290-315 now. But as a ROOKIE, he was weak for his size.

There's only a few guys in the NBA right now that can bench more than 400lbs. Two of them are Kevin Willis and the diminutive Earl Boykins.

In basketball, you really can't measure strength solely on bench press marks, look at David Robinson ro Charles Barkley. Barkley had no definition, but was very ,very strong because of his base. Robinson was all upper body and used to get pushed off the block alot because of his small lower body. Shaq gets alot of his positioning through the use of his butt, thighs and hips. His strength in these areas allow him to move and get players out of position. Its not all about upper body strength although Ming does need to improve this.

As a point of reference, in his rookie year Shaq was regularly outlifted by Greg Kite.

Remember, I'm talking about Shaq's rookie season. But I'd be suprised if Shaq could bench more than 315lbs today.

It's very hard for guys with long arms to bench a lot.

Anyone remember Anthony Goldwire? Or, Workman (forgot his first name; was with Pacers).

Those guys were stocky and strong and could bench around 350-400lbs.

What are u guys smoking. Shaq could easily bench more than 350 right now. Also, whoever said Earl Boykins could bench more than 400lbs is smoking something. I heard Earl on a radio interview with Jim Rome and also on a tv interview on the Best Damn Sports Show Period and he said he could bench over 300lb which is more than twice his weight: 130lb.

Also, food for thought: It was reported that Jordan could bench 500lb. Don't know if it was true, but I do know he was VERY strong on the court and thats how he could push people off with minimal effort and without making it look like a foul.

silent fan, you might be right about Earl Boykins. 300lbs might be right.

    But still!!!!!

Also, even if Shaq can bench 350, 375, 390...that wasn't the point.

Someone said that Shaq could bench twice HIS weight! 700lbs. No.

No matter what Earl Boykins bench presses, you know it still a damn lot for his size!!

    That says it all! Thanks.

Earl Boykins is cool! He seems so tiny compared to everyone else and still dominates the court! Owns! What a giant presence he is and makes......Rockets should get him for fun.

    Yao Ming and Earl Boykins.
