Thanks, that really explains everything rather well. Now I'm ready for the last three episodes.

I watched the first season of Breaking Bad. I loved it, but every time I tried to get into the second season, I just couldn't get in the mood to watch it.

Not that it's a bad show or got any worse in the second season or anything. I just couldn't get into it.

Eventually, I'll try to go through it again.

The title of the show, "True Detective", has always seemed a little odd to me, but it suddenly is making sense. The two guys questioning Cohle are detectives, but Cohle is the "true detectve" digging out the truth behind the truth, or seeing through the veil, or whatever.

I'm also thinking the falling out between the two that they keep alluding to could turn out to be a setup for Cohle to go digging "off the grid". The whole thing with him taking vacation to hunt down Ladou seems to set that up.

So, somebody said that everything you need to know can be found in the 1st episode, right?

Cohle asks for the beer, and then they flashback to the press conference for the murder and then to him and Hart talking to Charlie, who mentions Dora finding herself a "king."

So the first thing to show up after his "what, is this supposed to be admissable?" comment was the press conference and then the first mention of a "king."

The first thing he mentioned after drinking some of the beer was the Lake Charles incident.

Also, in that episode, during the night after they caught the case, Hart walked into his daughters' room and looked at them. Then he woke up on a chair in the living room in the morning. He didn't go to bed.

Lastly, Tuttle was never mentioned (as far as I know). But there were a few quick pass-by scenes of the police chief (I'm guessing that's him? The old man in the blue police uniform). The first one was while Hart was walking out of the Major's office after talking to him about the Dora Lange case for the first time. Hart walks past him and says "Prick" by his desk.

The second time we see that man was during the press conference. He gives Hart and Cohle a sort of angry look.

Does any of this matter? It might not. Those were just some interesting things I noticed.

I NEVER reply to Clutch Forums...but that is how good this show is...my $.02.

    1. If Hart was the Yellow King then he would have given Rust up to the 2 detectives earlier by changing 'their story' about LaDeaux and the iliegal gang activities that led to LaDeax

    2. Hart's daughter is key to Hart protecting Rust. Hart mentions that he missed the easiest clue under his noes and that was right there. His family. There is a connection to his daughter and (I think his a-hole F-In Law that he never seemed to get along with and the daughter.

    3. I do think Rust goes off of the grid after seeing the church stuff/evidence. Hart and Rust make up a narrative like the biker gang story, the LaDeaux story that we know is false and Giinger lead to protect Rust's investigation from the 'high level' contacts and 'high level' special investigators. The narrative is that he quits because of the drugs and alcohal use. However, we know that he has been seen at multiple criminal investigations and knows where and when killings will happen. Like he knows the timing and why just not the who. That is what is driving him.

    4. Rust and Hart know why they are called into the 'conference' the two investigators. They know that they (Rust and Hart) will be used and fingered as leads to past and current crimes. This is known from #3 above.

    5. Someting tragic happens the Hart's daughter. He indicated that things were good for a few years then quiet about what changed. The daughter is on a serious path to nowhere...we just don't know why and when it started except for those earlier drawings.

    6. For truley exceptional, I would believe that both Hart and Rust (both of whom are personally flawed) would rise above those flaws and find the real killer(s). Any trickery that has Hart or Rust being the killers is lame and lazy. You know that Rust is thinking 3-4 steps ahead of everyone. Always has...even when he was under cover.

    7. If Reveren Tuttel is killed by either Hart or Rust (which I do believe) the 'Higher Ups' then get nervous that the detective(s) or Rust is getting too close the source. That is why the IA begins.

It is a masterpiece so far.

"Don't go rushing to make a Red Light"...

This is such a great show, so many angles.

I think the Yellow King is either mythical (something those committing these murders are trying to reach or appease) or it is Tuttle and Martin's father in law is part of the cult.

Now Rust being so nutty is an act so he can investigate the crime. He keeps talking about a warrant, I think he wants the investigators to check that case of his but with a warrant everything they find ends up on the books. Leading up to this time Rust has been digging.

Who is the guy in the center of the picture? The lieutenant? Whoever he is, I just got creeped out when I realized that there are once again 5 "people" in the picture, and they're all staring directly at him. And he has a key above his head.

    My theory:

This thing had been going on for a while. Cohle shows up and his investigation is threatening to blow the whole thing open. Tuttle, the lieutenant (guy in the picture), Hart, and two other people (potentially Tuttle's family) are the five men in question. For whatever reason, Ledoux and various other cons knew about it. They've since been silenced. It's the only explanation as to why Hart immediately shot Ledoux upon seeing he had the children there. It also explains why Hart gets so irritated with his daughter, as she is growing up and seems a little slutty.

I don't know whether Cohle and Hart's "break-up" was real or planned. Either way, I think the team wanted the get Cohle off the grid because he was threatening to discover them. Also, Cohle would not be believed if he was not on the force any longer. Once he was booted off the grid, these guys can easily shape the investigation to make it look like he was responsible. He was at the crime scenes because he's still investigating. I'm assuming he has a lot of compiled evidence in his storage, and thus doesn't want anyone to see it. Part of me believes the split is going to happen when Ruston finally realizes Hart is in on it, and accuses him, but I'm not sure about that part.

I think there are obviously five men involved as main people, as that keeps popping up everywhere.

    This show is crazy.

You don't barrack for a television show. Horrible and stupid comparison to make. You support a team, if you don't enjoy a tv show you don't enjoy a tv show.

I thought the whole "M" theory monologue was awesome, it's popped up a few times in different forums etc. that Cohle was describing us as viewers (we're the 4th dimension) of TV & Movies as if the character knew he existed in a fictional story. So we see there time as flat, like our TV's, theater screens, computers etc. Not really sure if thats the point, if the creator used it as a chance to throw his two cents in on the state of our culture or if Cohle was simply describing the "M" theory and life. Regardless as we all are saying this show is fun to watch and re-watch.

    Random hunch I have...

There's something mysterious about Rust I haven't picked up on yet.

Apparently his father being sick was a lie. Apparently he'd disappear at times and go unaccounted for using various stories. Hart assumes it's normal, the two interrogators obviously think Rust was up to something fishy.

The interrogators think Rust is feeding Hart evidence, leading Hart to the verdict Rust wants. Manipulating Hart.

I'm thinking... maybe Rust was onto the real killer way early on. He is a genius, right? He's too smart. The real killer, probably Tuttle or a group with a lot of power is too hard to take down. Rust knows Hart wouldn't go for it so he investigates the REAL suspect on his own time. Hiding it from Hart completely. Does Rust even believe Hart to be competent at that point?

Perhaps getting to Ladoux was just a first step in Rust's master plan to solve the crime... Rust, the master interrogator who could convince anyone to confess was going to use Ladoux to get closer to Tuttle.

Then... in a rage, Hart kills Ladoux. Did you see Rust's face when it happened? He was in shock. Like his plan was ruined. He looked hurt even.

He decides to drop the pursuit of Tuttle (or whoever the real killer is) to protect Hart. Rust lost his family, lost his daughter. He wants Hart to get those things back and knows he never will if they don't cover up Hart's murder of Ladoux. Rust doesn't want Hart to suffer the same misery... Rust is trying to save Hart.

Rust hides his mind from the case by keeping busy, making a name for himself in his career, finds a women, pretends to love her... but the past keeps eating away at him. Then that one guy brings up the Yellow King in the interrogation room and Rust knows he has to finish what he started...

That scene at the end of episode 5, maybe that didn't occur 7 years after Ladoux was killed. Maybe it happened the exact same night Rust & Hart decided to pursue Ladoux in the first place.

Too confusing to read as you made the mistake of calling Woody Harrelson's character "Cohle", and MM's character "Rust".

Rust and Cohle are the same person/character. Its his last name. Woody's character is Marty Hart.

I just watched the first five episodes within one day (well, two nights). Can't wait for the last three.

Rust Cohle is definitely the "True Detective". He's not the killer.

Marty Hart, I'm not sure. But I don't think he is either. He is too much out of control to do things as deliberately as the killer did. But it is kind of suspicious that all of a sudden, he shot the handcuffed guy.

And yes, the daughter must have encountered the Yellow King. That painting on the wall - creepy.
