Ok.. I'm sure most people who check out this thread have not heard of Umphrey's McGee or guitarist Jake Cinnegar. They are a 'jamband' out of Chicago and I discovered them at the Bonnaroo Festival last summer. Here is a link to their MP3 page. For those not familiar with the 'jamband' label, it really covers a whole gambit of styles but generally bands who improvise are lumped into this category. Umphrey's McGee reminds me of Frank Zappa colliding with Rush at times but they touch on many different styles including metal, reggae, rock, jazz and ska.

    Songs

If you are interested in hearing the guitar solo I'm talking about, check out 'All In Time' which is Bonnaroo4.mp3.

The whole song is great but at about 6 minutes in (6:09 to be exact), Jake Cinnegar plays what I think is the most beautiful guitar solo I have probably ever heard. It only lasts about 45sec. but it is awe inspiring in my humble opinion.. What impresses me most is the combination of techical ability and emotion that is conveyed in this short but sweet passage of music.

I imagine that some people may not like this group, their style or the song in general but anyone who appreciates guitar masters should at least be impressed by this solo.. I'd be interested to see if anyone else is as impressed by this as I am.

Sorry for the double post.. I probably shouldn't have started this thread because it may be too difficult for people to download the song or to listen through 6 minutes just to hear a guitar solo. Ah well.... It was worth a try.

3fingeredgus -- that is a pretty good solo! I've heard of Umphrey's McGee before, but I haven't had time to check them out. I'll have to see if I can't post some of my favorite jam-band guitar solos.

I envy your trip to Bonnaroo!! I wish I could go this year, but I've got to go to Atlanta on June 15th for National Forensic League Nationals :( Perhaps next year. Actually, HELL YEAH for next year. I'll have my road-trip vehicle then, and I'll be on the road by June.

Hey Vengeance.. Thanks.. I won't be hitting Bonnaroo this summer.. Just Phishin' at the Gorge and moe.down after I move to the North East.. I wish I could afford another 'Roo but I have limited funds this summer.. I will be hitting Bonnaroo or Bonaroo Northeast next summer too. We'll have to get together if we're both there!

Woofer - Is that Eric Johnson?!?! I'm laughing my tail off right now.. You don't like Surfing With The Alien better than his stuff?

The solo was nice at the 6:00 mark. A nice little timing thing with the delay. The band sorta reminds me of Phish. Just one song I heard, but the type of Jam band that phish is. I will have to defer to Cliffs of Dover over this one, not trying to slight it though. Everyone draws inspiration from different things. I'm just into the whole tone thing now, with a nice warm tube amp, brightened with a little wah and a tad bit overdriven played on the front pickup of my strat. SRV, EJ, Hendrix, and on and on........

I guess I'm in retro mode now. And I'm really getting tired of the same old Mesa Triple Rect sound that the industry pushes. ( I know.....this song didn't have this sound at all, IM JUST VENTING). Personally, I'm glad to hear that AudioSlave gets airplay. It's refreshing to hear Morello's personality come out in his playing as opposed to the drop D Mesa wall that is in style now. Plus the riffs on that album are classic. Kind of an old throwback to a classic rock album.

I'm gonna give the other mp3's a listen to. Cool find.

Sounds like a delay pedal and some palm muting on the guitar - someone clarify me if I am wrong.

Sounds cool though. I like his style and the band!

Time to go find some KB ;)

I've always been partial to Mick Mars' solo on Livewire.
