    Hi
I was just wondering if there were any here that might be able to help me with a kitten I just found. Friday night a kitten fell in a storm gutter and has been there until about a hour ago. I was just able to catch it and pull it out. The mother had tried to get it but was not able to. I have seen her try but it was not ever successful. I brought it in to clean it up and I planed on putting it back with its mom and other kittens. I noticed on the side of its neck there were two holes ( I think from where the mom tried to hold on to it when jumping out) One hole is a little bigger and very swollen. There apears to be something coming out of it. I thought it was puss at first but I do not know. It kind of looks like it is pulsating. I just would like to know what I could do for it tonight until I take it to the vet Monday. I have been cleaning it but should I try and get the puss out??

    Thank you

    Blatz

What your kitten has is an abcess most likely caused by a bite from another cat. Your theory about the mother working to pull it out and causing the wound is very likely.

You should clean out the wound and, if possible, put some anti-bacterial spray orr creme on it - Bactene or Neo Sporin would work. If you don't have that, a little warm soap and water would be fine. Leave the wound open and keep the kitten in an enclosed area - a large cardbaord box with a blanket would be fine.

Make sure the kitten has food and water. It is likely he/she could be dehydrated and kittens can get sick if they aren't hydrated well. Milk is ok too if you have it but preferably canned food and water. The kitten may not want to eat if it hasn't been weened in which case milk will suffice.

Get him/her into the vet first thing tomorrow so they can clean out the wound. Better to round up the others if possible. They would be better off with homes rather than living as ferrel cats. If you have problems with adoption, Mrs JB and I can certainly help. We know all the places and have lots of options.

Just drop me an email - jeff@clutchcity.net

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the reply.

I just put some peroxide and Neo Sporin on the wound and made a nice little bed for him. I plan on going to the vet first thing in the morning. Then he will be heading for his new home right here with me. I have been trying to round up the others so I can find them a home but so far a couple of them have been able to elude me.

I can sleep good tonight knowing that he is out of the gutter and pipes under the street.

    Thanks again for the reply

A bit off topic, but that is almost the same way I found my cat. She was abandoned by her mother, most probably because she was the runt of the litter. Her eyes were full of yellow stuff (not sure of the technical term, but it was very crusty), so we whipped her down to the vet. 13 years on, she's as healthy as ever. And still very small.

...am I the only person that thought the thread title said "any vegetarians here"?? Then, I saw that Jeff had the first reply, so I thought there would be an eggplant lasagna recipe or something...

heh heh...same thing happened to me. And after reading the body of the post, I was all ready to jump out with my, "How dare you assume that only vegetarians would know about helping kittens you damn hippy" take. Then I read a little more carefully. :D I wish I had the excuse of being distracted by work.
