NEW YORK – The National Football League will team with long-time broadcast partner CBS to produce and televise Thursday Night Football for the 2014 season, it was announced today by NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL and LESLIE MOONVES, president and CEO of CBS Corp., and SEAN McMANUS, Chairman, CBS Sports.

CBS will air eight early season games that also will be simulcast on NFL Network. NFL Network will also televise eight late-season games in the run-up to the playoffs. The mix of games will include 14 on Thursday nights and two late-season games on Saturday.

The full slate of 16 regular-season games will be produced by CBS with its lead broadcasters and production team, including JIM NANTZ and PHIL SIMMS, on all Thursday night games. In a new twist, NFL Network hosts and analysts will be featured in the pregame, halftime and postgame shows along with CBS Sports announcers.

The agreement is for the 2014 season with an additional year at the NFL’s option.

Cool news. Not really a fan of Thursday Night Football, but at least I'll be able to watch.

Great news, although the Thursday night games were almost always terrible. I don't really feel like I was missing anything by not having NFL Network, but at least now I'll be able to watch if I want.

Is there any evidence that more players get injured in Thursday games than otherwise?

How so? They are just moving current Thursday games from NFL Network to CBS, no?

    And the double header Saturdays.

I see what he means though... modern day football on sundays, with the full complement of games, is just as exciting (if not more so) as the playoffs where there are only one/two games/day... or thursday night football... or even monday night football.

And fantasy football/gambling has everything to do with this. Unless I have a team involved in the playoffs, I'm far more amped for regular season football Sunday's vs. the playoffs.

That's a total of 2 games in one week.

Pretty sure an 18 game season is up next. Goodell is as money hungry as they come.

So this change benefits the owners (more money), the players (more money), and the fans (games more accessible), and the conclusion is that Goodell is greedy?

(I'm referring to the actual changes above, not an 18 game season)

That's how it starts. You end up with Saturday double headers (now I have to choose between college and pro games) then Thursday and Monday along with Sunday.

Fantasy football players won't like this either since now you have to pay even closer attention to schedules. Next thing you know there will be a Tuesday game.

Good luck with the GF fellas cuz they won't like it.

The Saturday games will be late in the season after CF season, during bowl season. I doubt you'll be missing much, but I hate Thursday night games as well. Keep it for Sunday/Monday.

Not to mention they had Saturday games at the end of the seasons for years.

The NFL's only competition for T.V. ratings on Thursday Night is against NBA on TNT (only on November and December).

    Are you serious?

I don't think the NBA on TNT registers great ratings now (on a national level), with zero other sports competition for the next few months.
