Agreed but as you mentioned the younger you are the harder it is to have perspective that this too shall pass. The mention about bullying following a kid home through social media is very true. And then the anonymity feeling of the internet that makes people say things they would never face to face/revenge pictures etc. can drive a young kid to stuff like this.

As another poster mentioned there is the hardiness factor too. Some people are just naturally thicker skinned. One guy could see a murder right in front of him and then suffer from nightmares, PTSD, agoraphobia, etc. Another guy it wouldn't even phase them and never lose any sleep.

Bullying children should be a crime, whether the bullying is being done by other children is irrelevant. And suspension should only be part of the punishment, juvenile detention for the offender and jail time for their parents should also be on the table.

The internet. Search for anything and you can find enough reports and articles and webpages dedicated to it, that you'll think it's the norm.

as cruel as bullying is and as much as it sucks there's no way in hell that it should be illegal and bullies should never be held liable for a kid hurting himself

It's actually hard according to latest science, in particular starting around those early teen years (11-16). That's when the teenager brain go through some major remodeling (last to ~age 24) and one thing it does is it makes them much more likely to want to push away from parent and go explore for themselves. They like to go to their peers and less to their primary caretaker. So, I think you can imagine what happen when they feel unaccepted and worse, bullied by their peers.

I believe that if teens (and parent, caretakers, teachers) understand a bit more on the dynamic of what teens are going through, how their brain is actually changing, how those changes are causing them to have certain type of behaviors, emotion, feeling, wanting to leave home, wanting to experiment, wanting to be with their peers, and thus being more aware of their inner word, they would be better equipt to handle any turmoil in their life such as being bullied.

This understanding is something that can be learn at home, but I do wish school have some classes toward this type of subject (inner world of our mind) earlier in their teenager life.
