Agreed. The deal make zero sense from a cap perspective. Getting out of Asik's deal gives the Rockets no flexibility even if they let both Gortat and Ariza leave. And with these two being unrestricted FAs, you will lose them in the offseason for nothing unless you reach a long term contract with them (which Gortat is unlikely to sign to be a backup again). And in the meantime you lose valuable assets to Washington? Pretty ****ty deal. Ariza is useful but we can find a similar player at a much lower cost.
How does it not make sense from a cap perspective? You gain the ability to add a significant amount of cap space to use this off season (~10m). If you want to argue for the 2015 Kevin Love plan, you are going to sacrifice Jones, Dmo, and our pick anyways. Gortat and Ariza probably walk, but we gain two two big holes THIS year. Our two biggest needs are a wing defender and a backup center. Howard is pretty old and offers a limited window of contention, making a win now move without sacrificing for the future is only a moderate gamble.
I'm going to keep saying this until it happens: Afflalo and Davis for Lin or Asik, Jones and a pick. Orlando wants to dump Afflalo now to maximize both return and to tank. Jones is a great pickup for them who fits in with the youth movement. Plus they dump Davis. Afflalo for us is huge bench scorer pickup on an excellent contract. Davis is on a short contract and wouldn't impact 2015 FA.
Is he better defensively than what we've got? I could see him being a super 6th man along with Lin. Don't know if we have what Orlando wants. I'd be willing to part with our first for some win now talent
Have you seen Davis? The guy is always over weight...it is insane to give up on Jones for Davis...insane.
Let's get wild http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=l6q2owt Rockets Out: Asik Lin Jones DMo Harden (haha yes, it's going to be one of these inane proposals) Rockets In: Love Afflalo Jameer Nelson Phoenix Filler Orlando Out: Afflalo Jameer Orlando In: Lin T Jones Archie Goodwin Phoenix Draft Compensation Phoenix Out: Archie Goodwin Pu-pu platter to make salary work (they are under the cap so have room) Draft Picks Phoenix In: Asik Minnesota Out: Love Minnesota In: Harden D Mo Why Rockets do it: Core of Howard, Love, Afflalo, and Parsons makes more sense than one involving Harden. Afflalo is a VALUE contract, and while his defense is not stellar it is at least existent (unlike Harden). Howard and Love are meant to be together. In this dream of dreams the Rockets also pick up Andre Miller for a song. Why the Rockets won't: Trading franchise players for one another does not happen. This trade decimates any bench we thought we had. Even though Houston is a much better situation than Minnesota, Love will probably still opt out and there's a good chance he would leave. Orlando cashes in on Afflalo in four ways: getting high upside players in Jones and Goodwin, getting the marketability of Lin, getting rid of Jameer's contract, and getting draft picks. Phoenix cashes in on their overabundance of draft picks (unrealistic for a team to open up four roster spots and carry four rookies at once) to get a starting center that doesn't tie up their books long term. Minnesota gets a superstar for Love who is going to leave anyway. They probably wouldn't do this trade, and that would make them idiotic. Love is not resigning there. And 3 years of Harden versus getting NOTHING in return is a non-debate.
So we give up a star with a proven history of leading a team to victories in exchange for a star with a proven history of not leading a team to victories. And then we give up some talented youngsters in order to acquire journeymen. AND THEN we give up perhaps the best defensive C in the NBA for - um, filler I guess? Wow. No.
Yes the majority of the trade is stupid, and as I stated, the Rockets wouldn't do it because my proposal doesn't actually work in the NBA where teams require more than a starting 5 (ask GSW, POR last year). HOWEVER... I think your rote dismissal of a Harden for Love swap is a little disheartening. People that single out individual players in a team sport as being unable to lead them to wins is a little outdated wouldn't you say? Kevin Durant is the probable MVP, a transcendent offensive player, and do you think OKC would be in the playoffs if Reggie Jackson and Serge Ibaka weren't contributing? I guess that makes him a leader? I think Love for Harden would be an interesting trade if their contracts were interchangeable. The probability of Love leaving in FA after next year makes the conversation moot, but the thought of having the premier stretch 4 in the game (Younger than Aldridge and Bosh) to pair with Howard could dynamically change the entire offense. At the cost of having a premier penetrator/distributor in Harden, I don't know if that would be something worth exploring. Smarter basketball minds than myself would have to break it down.
The guy says what he is about to say is nonsense, you take it as being serious and he has the problem? lmao
Would y'all take Michael Kidd Gilchrist and Bismack Biyombo for Asik? Wouldn't change the starting lineup nor the developing chemistry and we get two young players... Biyombo who has shown flashes of being a very nice defender/rebounder and MKG who could bring that defense and depth at the 2/3 spot that we need. Charlotte could put together a Memphis Grizzlies blueprint with Jefferson and Asik down low.
take that in a heartbeat, i dont think they let MGK go, though. he doesnt have the shooting we need, but hes an excellent wing defender
Huh? So why did he come back at it again? Just because it's the random trade ideas thread doesn't mean things HAVE to be put out there if they're that ridiculous. And he never said it was nonsense, I did.
in·ane iˈnān/Submit adjective 1. silly; stupid I think that pretty much sums it up; though, I would say your reply about leaders had less logic than my original statement. Nor would I say is "THAT" ridiculous. If you haven't noticed many teams have forfeited their entire roster in search of star-laden starting lineups. Take a look at the bench of the Heat, Golden State, the Knicks... these are teams that went all in to acquire big names. Thankfully, our GM is not that desperate/stupid.
He is better than what we have. I just don't want people to assume that he is a scorer AND defender, you get one or the other. He is capable of being a plus defender, but if you concentrates on that facet of his game, you get mediocre offense.
