You people throwing around your conspiracy theories and accusations. It's a pretty simple basketball matter:

    1. When Parsons was replaced, the Cavs were on a 9-0 run during 3 minutes and 23 seconds, with Luol Deng, the opposing SF, scoring 7 of these points on 3 for 3 shooting. The Rocket went on a 9-0 of its own after Lin replaced Parsons in the lineup, during which Luol Deng missed the next 3 shots he took. After that, the Rockets held a substantial lead for the rest of the game.

    http://www.nba.com/games/20140201/CLEHOU/gameinfo.html?ls=slt

This is at least some confirmation that the move was made because "the other group was playing better" rather than some sort of misguided attempt to punish Parsons or whatever it is.

    2. Notably, the Cavs played either relatively small guys Jarrett Jack or Dion Waiters at the SG all game, which makes down-sizing with the 2 PG lineup easier compared to when one of Lin and Beverley have to check a significantly larger guy.

    3. I am not sure why going with and sticking with a lineup that had a positive impact on the game, whether it involves sitting Parsons, sitting Lin or even sitting Dwight Howard, deserves derision. You play the game to win, no?

    4. As for any lingering emotional scars that Parsons may experience, I am not really concerned. Players pretty much all prefer to play and are not happy about sitting, but most of them tend to be less emo than their fans are. Lin and DMo, for example, two guys whose fans complain that they didn't get enough minutes seems to be pretty productive and mentally healthy of late.

The keys is to have a coach who is able to keep the locker room together-- compare the Rockets to what's been reported about the Cavs, for example.

    5. As for the whole Patterson/Robinson trade: The point I made at the time was based on one observation-- that Robinson sucks at NBA basketball and really doesn't have the kind of star potential that people here were raving about based mostly on his draft position. Turns out it's been a correct observation so far: Robinson sucked on the Kings, he sucks on the Rockets, and he still mostly sucks on the Blazers.

He is a very good job hustling for rebounds but that's all he's good for. He can't shoot even midrange Js, can't create his own offense, and doesn't even finish very well around the basket. He is getting 10 or 12 minutes a game in Portland, and the team is 4.6 points worse on offense and 9.2 points worse on defense when he is on the floor. He is looking more like Reggie Evans than what one expects out of a top 5 pick.

Then say that in your opening statement but don't start a thread called The Benching of Chandler Parsons and then relate it to why no one should b**** about Lin's minutes. That's just ridiculous. (your words)

By the way none of what you said explains why McHale subbed out Harden for Casspi instead of Parsons. I am sure you'll make an excuse but the reality is you don't know. The consensus on this board is either he wanted to rest Parson so he had energy for the super bowl parties or Parsons was in his doghouse.

yes, the game is all about matchups which is why some players play lights out against some teams and disappear against others.

superstars consistently play well no matter who they're up against and why they earn so much because coaches know what they're going to get.

with everyone else from night to night you may not get the same results.

It's clearly Mchale punished him for going public on Harden's ISO. On Parsons defense, he was actually complement Harden's game. Harden's ISO is equal to the whole team ball movement for an open shot.

Why cant you just accept that the coach left him on the bench because the players on the floor were playing great (which they were)? Instead of making it about the coach punishing Parsons, or any other conspiracy theory that people on this forum love so much.

-Some people have a broad definition of "doghouse." Even when a guy averages 30+ mpg both this season and last, he is still supposedly in the coach's "doghouse."

    - Parsons will be back next game, will start barring something bizarre happening, and will play a lot of minutes-- whether it's more or less depends on his own performance, matchups and other factors.

Parsons, Lin, even DMo are not in the "doghouse." For examples of guys who are in the doghouse, look to Royce White last year and Marcus Morris the year before.

    - Not sure why I had to put the +/- data in the initial post. If people watched the game and have a reasonably good memory, they should recall what went on. Having lost a substantial lead from the end of the 2nd quarter to the first part of the 3rd and trailing by 2 was a pretty obvious thing. Don't blame me if you don't notice these things.

-The point I was making is that Lin getting pulled because the coaches have objective reasons to believe that another option is better is nothing to b**** about. People tend to focus on Lin but the same thing happens to other players also, be it Jones, Parsons, Howard, etc.

    - People complain about how badly Casspi supposedly played last night and how he shouldn't have played over Parsons. There is a difference between shooting badly and playing badly. He had a tough shooting night but did not have a negative impact on the game.

Casspi was in during the first half at SF when the Rockets went on a run to achieve their biggest lead in the 2nd quarter. He was out of the lineup for most of the period when the Rockets had the lead cut down by half going into the halftime and when they lost the lead to start the 3rd quarter. At the time of Casspi's insertion into the lineup, the Rockets were +7 when he in, and they were -5 when Parsons was in (-14 if you don't count Parsons' first stint to start the game, when the starting group opened up a 9 point lead).

So, it was not crazy for McHale to go with Casspi late in the 3rd quarter based on what happened previously in this game. During Casspi 3rd/4th quarter stint the Rockets basically held the lead at around 10-12 points mostly with a group that did not have Dwight or Harden.

    http://popcornmachine.net/cgi-bin/gameflow.cgi?date=20140201&game=CLEHOU

    - Side note: Casspi has recently been getting more SF minutes after Garcia's injury. Prior to this, Casspi almost exclusively played PF. There isn't a whole lot of data on the Casspi at SF situation yet (as of January 26, Casspi only played 3% of total available SF minutes), but it's something worth watching.

The team said several times early in the season that Casspi played better at PF than SF. I wonder how things will turnout when they try him more at the SF.

Jesus lets just put this thread to bed.

    McHale doesn't hate Lin.

OldManRock is going at CH because of a preexisting feud.

McHale indirectly said why he played Parsons less than normal, he and Jones (to a lesser extent) didn't follow the defensive game plan and McHale is sick of it.

Hopefully it doesn't happen again... Although it has all year.

Since I'm the only one talking about McHale's doghouse I assume you are talking about me. And since you are referring to me or talking out your ass let me be clear, I never said Lin was in McHale's doghouse. I think McHale believes Beverly deserves more minutes than Lin and I am not sure I disagree considering the rollercoaster of consistency Lin displays. But your point about Lin doesn't belong in this thread.

This thread is about THE BENCHING OF CHANDLER PARSONS. You opened it up and now you don't like the can of worms that has come out. What people have to say about it is all over the place. But the one thing that you can't argue against is McHale picking Casspi over a healthy rested Parsons. Your explanation is total BS when you ignore that, no matter how eloquently you dress it up with stupid stats. Parsons was not out there alone. His plus and minus was part of a team effort.

There is no big story here. I don't care much why CP got benched. I am happy McHale has got some sense in his head and sees that DMo can help this team. I love the idea that we can go small with Harden, Lin and Beverly now. And I have always believed Casspi was better at SF than PF. Those are all adjustments that many on this board have expressed long before McHale implemented them.

But at least be honest about the elephant in the room. Parsons has not played less than 30 minutes all year long, 13 games of 40 plus minutes. The game he played only 30 minutes was a blowout that the bench was cleared. The first game after his back injury when Coach definitely should have rested him he plays 40. And now we are to believe the coach thinks Casspi is better than a healthy rested Parsons in last nights game. Ha! That some Rules of Radicals BS if I ever heard it.

Yes it possible that McHale is totally into playing the proper rotation now. There is a first time for everything. But then you are acknowledging that there is a chink in his armor (for those who want to twist it, I am not at all referring to Jeremy Lin). And he has before not played Casspi at the 3 or DMo at the 4 either because wasn't smart enough to see their value there or he has a doghouse.

Let's also be clear about a doghouse. It's a imaginary penalty box players are benched in for reasons other than normal. So if what mchale said,..

McHale: "I just felt the team played more balanced with Chandler out of the game."

McHale: "players did not follow defensive game plan."

McHale: "...was looking for combinations that would click."

McHale was a little over the place there almost like he was dancing but if any of those are true than Parsons was not in his doghouse. but if it was for one of the many other reason's people have voiced here.

Parson is penalized for speaking out the truth.

Parsons has learned what you would get when taking shot at the star of the team!

Michael (McHale) benched parsons because chandler spoke out against harden

Those aren't my words but if true, that's being in the doghouse. Again I do not pretend to know if Parsons was a little bit in McHale's doghouse last night. What I do know is McHale has never played Casspi over a healthy rested Parsons. And because of that some including me question why Parsons was benched. You opened the can if you don't like what's inside you have no one to blame but yourself.

Are you saying, Jeremy's constant drifting away from his guy, which sometime result in a wide open shot, is part of Mchale defensive game plan?

How is this worthy of a thread. ARe we to believe that Chandler Parsons is above being benched? If Dwight Howard is not above being benched, then for sure, CP is not either. Really, no one on the team should be above the law.

So, you are upset that my posts in thread involve a discussion of Parsons benching vs. Lin benching instead of the "punishment" theory you favor?

Ok, then. Glad you got that theory off your chest. I don't read McHale's mind and don't know if he had any hidden motivation. What I see in the game, and in the numbers, make the choice look justified. As for why Parsons never played this few minutes before-- which game would you have played him few minutes in? Was there a specific game where Parsons was screwing up, leading to a couple of big runs by the opponent, and a non-Parsons lineup was an immediate big positive when it comes in?

Parsons has had some bad shooting games, but his overall play has been consistent (more so than, for example, Lin's) and his potential replacement (Garcia) has mostly struggled.

As for Harden: First, he was benched in crunch time in Los Angeles when he kept losing track of JJ Redick. Second, there is no comparing him to Lin. Harden is by far the perimeter player on the team and there are few instances where you are better off without him even considering his faults.
