You're assuming Heavy Metal is a legitimate genre. I think it's what Hard Rock groups called themselves that had run out of ideas and knew any comparison to their truly great forerunners/contemporaries was hopeless... so they and the music industry came up with "something new"... Heavy Metal.

Just my opinion. I'm sure it won't be popular. ;)

    Deadbird, by Lynyrd Skynyrd

If I took on Led Zepplin,
    Would you still remember me?
For I must be kidding myself now
They're too kick ass, ya see?

If I sing here with Plant, girl
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'd be dead as a bird now,
    A bird in a shootin' ra-a-ange!

My nasal voice is just won't cha-a-ange,
And this note, it just can't cha-a-ange,
    Lord knows, it's a two-note ra-a-ange!

Bye-bye babe, I've been beat, love
'Beat like a dog with mange,
But please don't feel so badly,
'Cause Lord knows my band's to blame.

I think I speak for everyone when I say:

Trixter, Britny Fox, or Roxy Blue?

I always thought Metal was a little darker than Hard Rock, not to mention faster and louder.

    Metal = death and destruction
Rock = trying to get laid.

Ding ding ding...he gets it in one..;)

and yes...there is a difference between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal..

Hard Rock is Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, UFO, Thin Lizzy
Heavy Metal is Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions( until after Blackout)

Then you can subdivide Metal to the real hardcore death and destruction that is played at a million beats a minute and where the singer growls into the mike instead of attempting to sing..thats called Death Metal or Thrash.

oh yea...Zeppelin by far...Skynryd was a great Southern Rock group...but nowhere near as influential as Zeppelin....and without Clapton...a whole generation of guitar players would have had to find someone else to be influenced by...including Page.

    I like em all.

    IMHO.....

Clapton is a better guitarist than Jimmy Page or either Skynyrd guitar players.

Skynyrd wrote GREAT songs, maybe better than the other two.

Zeppelin put on the best live performances of the three.

LOL, they used to play that on KPFT at night. Those "singers" make me laugh. They all growl exactly the same as if they have someting stuck in their collective throats! I always thought it was one band they played over and over again but as it turns out...it wasn't.

Maybe Clapton is better at leads in a technical sense, but Page is a way more interesting guitar player in terms of rhythm, orchestration and timbre (Jimmy Page still has some of the best guitar sounds of all time). I would rather play in a band with Page than Clapton any day.

there is an entire subculture of that stuff...with names that sicken me just to look at..and the real thing that gets me....what the hell kinda talent does it take to play the stuff? riff at 300bpm and scream unintelligable words or phrases that you couldnt understand even if ya slowed it down...
just goes to show ya...aint no accounting for taste.

The problem with your poll is that you're comparing three different styles of rock. Its kind of like comparing a center (Dream) to a guard (MJ). Yeah, they're all rock & roll just like a basketball player is a basketball player, but I think the analogy holds water.

All three defined their genres of rock in their own way. Led Zepplin lead the way for hard rock and metal, Cream was more blues-oriented imo, and Skynrd was definitely in their own class with Southern rock. (And yeah, they're all blues-ey, but all rock comes from the blues....even old Black Sabbath has a distinctive blues sound. They're all ball players, but different, you know?)

Personally, Cream has never been one of my favs. I like them, don't get me wrong....just not THAT much. I love Zepplin. They're one of the greatest bands of all time, as is Skynrd. I'd honestly have to go with Skynrd, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I think that they're better. I just love their stuff. And I love Zepplin's stuff. No one can deny that Led Zepp had a greater influence by FAR.

God I hate questions like this.

Sorry man. No one touches Sabbath for me. They're my all-time favorite band. Keep in mind they always list Zepplin as an influence....Sabbath is where parent-freaking-out music was born.

(swallowing my rage to keep from lashing out)

I definitely agree with you on that last sentence.
