Bobby Knight would never ever work in today's NBA. That style of in your face threaten me to perform coaching works in college because he has authority over them. But it would fail miserably in the NBA as he would be dealing with multimillionaires who don't have to listen to him to get paid. Besides, who wants this overrated has been of a coach when there are better ones available. He hasn't led his teams past the 1st round of the NCAA tournament in his last 8 tries or so. And now while the NBA would hide his biggest flaw: his inability to recruit well, for the reasons I stated above he would be a colossal failure in the NBA. Tech is fast on their way to mediocrity with the General, and that's what they get for hiring a man who did not deserve a 2nd chance, and left Indiana in shambles as well.
Hey HillBoy- How is Bobby Knight everything that's wrong with pro. sports?! How about A.I.? Rapper, Druggie, Violent, Ball Hog, Thug. This guy makes Knight look like St. Peter. Others that could go on this list are Bill Romanowski, Mike Tyson, Dennis Rodman, and Darryl Strawberry. Bobby Knight is everything that's wrong with pro sports........horse s---!!
how did this thread derail into talk about Knight taking over for Rudy. The question is a matter of platooning...Knight is just an anecdote.
Bobby Knight...hummm... the man kicked his own son, who was playing for him at Indiana at the time, during a game... no thank you
I don't like this idea. The problem is that neither of our PFs are #1-3 options on the team. What I would not want to see happen is either one of them playing outside of their game to earn more playing time in the second half. As a slight modification to the plan though, you could set some minimum expectations on the players, which they must meet if they want to get PT in the second half. Something like, get 4 rebound and a block for Eddie. You want to give them something to focus on, some part of the game that is within their control. Sometimes people get too focused on the big picture and they lose sight of how they can contribute.
We aren't talking about a computer program decision here. If that "played outside of their game" plan, then they went against the coaches wishes, and they get benched...no? don't get stuck on stats...coaches don't. A coach will know when someone is playing great within the game plan.
What woud Bob Knight do? Choke Griffin to death. Throw chairs at Moochie. Head bum Mobley. Want more?
I get what you are saying, I just don't want a mentality like playing for a contract every night. I just think it will confuse the players if they go all out to try to earn minutes, but then get benched for not playing their game and then they try to tone it down to avoid that happening, but then get benched because they are being outplayed. I know that things are easiest for me if I have goals. I just think if Rudy gave them some personal goals to accomplish nightly, that would help them focus on what they have control over.
Interesting. The Rockets are not Bobby Knight's kind of team. BUT, he is the kind of coach they need. Knight, however, is a head case. He is arrogant, dictatorial, obnoxious, and sometimes simply out of control (needs Paxil and Anger Management), HOWEVER, I love his approach to coaching. His teams are always well disciplined, they play hard, shoot well, rebound aggressively, make their free throws, and play tough defense. Forget Knight as the Rocket's coach, but I am all for bringing his coaching style here.
Anything is worth a try. Not sure if it would work. But do you honestly think that Rudy would implement this? No.
I'd start Q3 with the better first half performer. But, I'd probably never be accused of being a "Players' Coach". (PS - I would factor in more than just points scored...there are some defensive matchups where Griffin would have a distinct advantage over Mo T who may have gotten a lot of points vs the backup PF).
